National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
Results
of the 2007 Survey of Student Engagement confirm that Earlham is
effectively engaging its students in active learning. The NSSE
assessment, developed with support from The Pew Charitable Trusts
and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in
2001, asks first-year and senior students to report what they actually
do while they are in college and focuses on the processes of learning.
North Central Association
of Colleges and Schools Accreditation
In
2004 Earlham received its full 10-year accreditation with a very
positive review. The College has been continuously accredited by
the Higher Learning Association of the North Central Association
of Colleges and Schools since 1913.
The Teagle Foundation
The
Teagle Foundation approved a request from
Earlham in 2008 for a grant of $149,577 for general education learning
goal assessment. Kari Kalve was the author of the proposal and
will serve as project director. Plans include implementing a procedure
for assessing two of our 10 General Education learning goals each
year on an ongoing five-year rotation that will include student
faculty research projects, selecting the best assessment practices
for Earlham and creating a system to carry out assessment every
five years. As a result of these projects, we expect to see improved
NSSE scores in first-year student engagement, improved campus-wide
understanding of our general education process and improved student
general education learning.
U.S. News & World Report Rankings
Earlham
College President Douglas C. Bennett has taken a stand against the
usefulness of U.S. News rankings in providing students meaningful
information in the college search process. Earlham is one of a more
than 80 colleges, members of the Annapolis
Group, that do
not participate in the reputational survey.
