Fiske Guide to Colleges 2007
(Edward B. Fiske)
One of 45 schools included in Fiske's The
Best Buys of 2007, Earlham earned high marks for "serious
academic atmosphere" and "quality of life."
|
 |
Information for this selective guide of 300 of the "best
and most interesting institutions in the nations" comes from
questionnaires sent to administrators and a cross-section of students.
A staff of journalists and freelance writers collate the information
and write essays that are edited by Edward B Fiske, former education
editor of The New York Times.
On a one-to-five scale with five denoting the highest rating, Earlham is rated with four pens for academics indicating above average curricular offerings and "an especially serious academic atmosphere." Earlham received five stars for Quality of Life, reflecting good academic credentials and plenty of social life, and three phones for Social Life, indicating a typical college environment. |

Excerpts:
• "Earlham is a study in contradictions
— a top-notch liberal arts institution in a conservative
city few could place on a map, and an institution that even in
the 21st century remains true to the traditions of community,
peace, and justice that are hallmarks of its Quaker heritage."

|
• "Challenged to think and meet high academic expectations, students
see themselves as capable and eager to learn. 'More
than that, professors expect students to expect a lot out
of themselves,' says a politics major."
• "Earlham may be small, but its student body is exceptionally diverse."
• "Although Earlham students are based in the Midwest, they graduate ready to take on the world, thanks to the school's cooperative, can-do spirit, international perspective, and caring student/faculty community." |
