The Templeton Guide

Earlham is one of 100 colleges and universities selected for The Templeton Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges.

“(These colleges) exhibit a strong and inspiring campus-wide ethos that articulates the expectations of personal and civic responsibility in all dimensions of College life.”

Templeton's selection criteria include:

•  A clear and compelling vision and mission that express a commitment to prepare students for lives of personal and civic responsibility;

•  The significant involvement and participation of faculty in forming and shaping the ideals and standards of personal and civic responsibility;

•  Evidence that a wide variety of programs exists to prepare students for lives of personal and civic responsibility;

•  The integration of personal and civic responsibility standards and activities into the core curriculum or areas of academic study;

•  External recognition or honors; and

•  Procedures to assess effectiveness of campus-wide character-development programs. “Earlham has combined a concern for spirituality with a devotion to academic excellence to foster a learning environment in which students can acquire the knowledge and skills to transform themselves and society. As members of each class have attested to two, five and ten years after graduation, Earlham has continued to influence the values they apply to their occupational learning experience and personal lives.”

In addition, Earlham is one of 60 colleges and universities to have its volunteer service programs cited by the Templeton Foundation.

Volunteering at Earlham

“Earlham College’s Service Learning Program (SLP) is designed to encourage civic responsibility through community service. Working in conjunction with the student-run Earlham Volunteer Exchange (EVE), SLP volunteers view service as an integral part of their learning experience.

“More than 60% of Earlham students engaged in volunteer activities during the recent academic year, reflecting the College’s commitment to community service and to the Quaker values of honesty, responsibility and integrity.”
