Forum to Discuss Earlham-Richmond
Science Connections on March 25

RICHMOND,
Ind. — Three speakers highlight science connections
between Earlham College and the Richmond community on Thursday,
March 25, during an Earlham College Forum.
The address begins at 8 a.m.
in Loose Lecture Hall. A continental breakfast will be served
at 7:30 a.m. in the Richmond Room.

Amy Mulnix, associate professor
of biology and director of Earlham’s Howard Hughes
Medical Institute (HHMI) grant, presents “How Howard
Hughes Medical Institute Grant Reaches Out to Community.” Mulnix
discusses HHMI-sponsored programs at Earlham.
Janet Russell, science education
coordinator, presents “Earlham’s
Natural Science Division’s Interaction with Community.” Russell
discusses examples of how various science curricula are reaching
out to the community.
Mary Hagerman, director of Earlham’s Analytical Laboratory
(EAL), presents “Local Water Sources and Levels of Purity.” EAL
was established in 1982 and does analytical work for local
industries and utilities in support of Industrial Pre-Treatment
and Discharge Permits as mandated by the Richmond Sanitation
District. Hagerman has done chemical monitoring in support
of the Middle Fork Watershed for the Wayne County Soil and
Water Conservation District, and is a member of the Local Planning
Team for Wellhead Protection of Richmond’s Drinking Water
Supply.
