RICHMOND, Ind. — Earlham
College honored two Indiana high school teachers during the 2007 Academic
All-Stars luncheon on April 11, in Indianapolis.
Taira Lynch, a Batesville High School science teacher,
was named the Distinguished Teacher in Sciences, and Rebecca Streitmatter,
an English teacher at Tri-County High School in Wolcott, was named
the Distinguished Teacher in Humanities. Each teacher received
an award of $1,000.
Members of Earlham's Admissions Office
selected the teachers based on the essays the Indiana Academic
All-Stars wrote about the teacher that had the most influence
on their academic career.
"(Miss Lynch) not only gave me the latitude for my love
of learning but caused it to grow and flourish," Academic
All-Star Robert Wasser wrote in the conclusion of his essay. "In
short, Miss Lynch is the teacher every student needs."
Amanda Haskins, an Academic All-Star from Tri-County
High School, said her American Literature teacher taught her the
value of education and helped her to realize that it was a lifelong
lesson.
"I have watched Mrs. Streitmatter pull her
hair, roll about on the floor, and dramatically recite stanzas
of poetry from memory," Haskins wrote in her essay. "Each
day that I entered her classroom, her enthusiasm for the subject
she taught convinced me — regardless of my mood or motivation —
that it would be worth my time to be equally excited."
Each year, accredited high schools throughout the
state may nominate one senior for consideration. Academic All-Star
selections are based on SAT/ACT scores, grade point average, academic
courses and achievement, extracurricular activities, community
service, and leadership. This year, 40 All-Stars were selected
from 88 regional winners and 228 nominations.
Kirsten Bunner, a regional winner from Decatur Central High School,
has chosen to attend Earlham this fall.
The Indianapolis Star Indiana Academic All-Stars program,
now in its 21st year, is a partnership of The Indianapolis
Star, the Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana
Association of High School Principals. Earlham is an associate
sponsor.
Franklin College also recognized two teachers with $1,000 Influential
Educator awards.
