For Immediate Release:
Dec. 3, 2007
Earlham basketball fans support the Quakers at last year's "White
Out".
RICHMOND, Ind. — Cheering
and silence will be part of this weekend's Earlham College basketball
activities as the Quakers open play in the North Coast Athletic
Conference.
Festivities begin on Friday, Dec 7, at 10 p.m.,
with a pep rally at Schuckman Court and Trueblood Fieldhouse. "We
hope to use the this event as a way for students
to relax before finals begin and to kick off the home basketball
season the next day," Earlham
Athletics Director Frank Carr said. "It's an exciting time of year
for all and a great way to end the first semester."
On Saturday, Dec. 8, the Earlham women's soccer team
will conduct a silent auction in the lobby of the Athletics
and Wellness Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The basketball action begins at 1 p.m. with the Earlham
women's basketball team playing Oberlin
on Schuckman Court. The men's game between the
two colleges is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
Pep Rally
As students enter Schuckman Court for the pep rally, they
will be given a raffle ticket for prizes that will be awarded
on Friday and Saturday. "The
purpose is to promote school spirit and enthusiasm for Earlham
athletics," Earlham
Associate Dean of Diversity Mounira Morris said.
The captains of both basketball teams will speak
and introduce the other players, while students will practice cheers,
chants and songs that will used during Saturday's games.
After the pep rally, pizza will be available for
all students in Trueblood Fieldhouse. "This event is planned by
a committee, comprised of faculty, staff and students," Morris
said.
Silent Auction
Director of Alumni Relations Gail Clark looks at items
during a previous silent auction at the Athletics and Wellness Center.
A
large number of items will be up for bid in the
silent auction benefiting the Earlham women's soccer team European
trip and the annual National Girls and Women in Sport Day coming later
this winter.
Autographed sports memorabilia, accommodations in
Hawaii, Jamaica and other hotels, tickets for sports and entertainment
events, artwork, and restaurant gift certificates will all
be available to the highest bidder. "We
are extremely appreciative of the donations we have received," Earlham
Head Women's Soccer Coach Jim Watts said. "There are so many
items, and our student-athletes are committed to making
this auction a success."
Watts and his players have raised around 20 percent
of the funds needed for the team's visit to Belgium, Germany
and Holland in August 2008.
