Graphic
Designer Julia Jensen of Earlham's Public Affairs Office holds a plaque
recognizing her Gold and Silver awards from the Annual Admissions Advertising
Awards competition, presented by Admissions
Marketing Report. Spread across the table are products from her work on the campaign to promote and advertise Earlham's 50 Years of International Study.
RICHMOND, Ind. — Julia Jensen crafts word and image in unique and powerful ways
to convey the Earlham message. While her colleagues at Earlham
College are familiar with her talents, recently Jensen's
craftsmanship earned the College recognition on a wider scale.
Her publications earned Gold and Silver awards from the Annual
Admissions Advertising Awards competition, presented by Admissions
Marketing Report.
The Report, a marketing publication for higher education,
now in its 25th year, announces through its Web site more than
2,100 entries from more than 1,200 colleges and universities. It
is the oldest and largest educational advertising awards competition
in the country.
Jensen's work on the campaign to promote and advertise Earlham's
50 Years of International Study garnered the Gold Marketing Report
Award. The Richard Harrison Bailey Agency, a marketing and design
firm based in Indianapolis, created the logo and original patchwork
look, while Jensen molded the designs. Her work highlights the
logo, incorporating it throughout the banners, newspaper advertising,
Frisbees, t-shirts and bookmarks used for this celebration.
The first visible sign of the campaign is
seen along National Road West, as the Earlham corridor is lined
with welcome banners. The banners declare 50 Years of International
Study as "woven
into our fabric" using Earlham maroon splashed with bright
blues, green and orange. Each banner also contains an overlay of
the words "powerful, personal, peaceful," constant
themes throughout Jensen's work.

Frisbees and t-shirts were distributed to
students, faculty and staff during a special day of recognition
last fall while the newspaper advertising was used to highlight
Earlham's International
Programs throughout the academic year.
Jensen says the creative process took months, including many brainstorming
sessions involving the RHB agency as well as a team of College
community members.
The Silver award recognizes Jensen's
work on two pieces used by the Earlham Admissions Office to inform
and attract prospective students.
The award-winning Admissions search piece
describes "The
Earlham Effect" as a complete shift in perspective. Jensen
says that tagline has been used for several years to describe the
unique Earlham experience.
A sweeping photo of "The Heart" at the center of campus
provides the backdrop. The photo was taken by Earlham's photographer,
Tom Strickland, as he took a ride with Jensen's father, Jerry
Jensen, in his World War II-model biplane. Jensen's father
flew Strickland for an entire day as he shot photographs of all
angles of campus.
As the brochure unfolds, photos of instructors
and students engaged in learning and fine arts, illustrate the
relationship between students and faculty as co-learners. Words
and images illustrate academic inquiry, Quaker values and a "lively
and engaging community."
"It's really cool to win an award," Jensen
says. While she has won awards for some personal projects, this
is the first to recognize her professional work.
As a professional, Jensen says she "fell" into design
work, first serving as an administrative assistant at a greeting
card company. Her duties included ordering office supplies and
distributing mail. "I was horrible at that job," Jensen
says.
However, she did become interested in the
graphics work there, and soon took classes to learn publishing
software such as Quark Express and Photoshop. After brief stints
at the Palladium-Item and Friends United Meeting, the opportunity
at Earlham became available. Since January 2000, it's been
all about communicating for Earlham College.
"Highly gratifying," are the words Jensen uses to
describe this recognition. "This award feeds my vanity, but
all I've really done is take other people's concepts
and adapt them."
But the recognition does, in a way, influence
her future work, and motivates her to "go one better" she
says.
What about working for Earlham? "It is fun to create, and
do something different every day," Jensen says. "I
love working for Earlham. I believe in what Earlham stands for,
and I like what happens to the students here. It makes me excited
to let the rest of the world know."
