FCNL Official Speaks at Earlham
Following February Trip to Iran
For Immediate Release:
March 6, 2007
During a weeklong visit to Iran in February, FCNL
Executive Secretary Joe Volk makes a point in a meeting
with the deputy foreign minister.
RICHMOND, Ind. — Joe Volk,
executive secretary of the Friends Committee on National Legislation
(FCNL), will discuss the danger of the United States and Iran stumbling
into an "accidental" war during a visit to Earlham College
on Thursday,
March 8.
The talk begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Landrum Bolling
Center's Loose Lecture Hall. The event is open to the public, and
admission is free.
Volk was part of a 13-person delegation of U.S.
religious leaders that recently returned from a weeklong trip
to Iran with a proposal for direct, government-to-government negotiations
between the United States and Iran. The group also called for
promoting more people-to-people exchanges, including religious
leaders, members of Parliament/Congress and civil society.
The delegation met with Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad on Feb. 25, for two-and-a-half hours and covered a
range of topics, including the role of religion in transforming
conflict, Iraq, nuclear proliferation, and the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict.
Speaking on how Congress can support direct, face-to-face
talks between the United States and Iran, Volk notes Indiana
leaders may play an important role. Senator Richard Lugar and
former Representative Lee Hamilton have been key voices in calling
for direct negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, but the FCNL
feels there are many others within the Bush administration who
appear eager to exacerbate tensions between the two countries.
