Earlham Hosts High School Choral Festival
For Immediate Release:
March 22, 2007
"Sharing choral experiences with other talented and dedicated
singers and professional musicians provides a unique forum for
learning and growth," says Wei Cheng, concert conductor and
interim director of choral activities at Earlham.
RICHMOND, Ind. — Culminating
with a performance of Giacomo Puccini's Messa
di Gloria, the 11th Earlham College Invitational
High School Choral Festival is set for Saturday, April 14,
at 7:30 p.m., in the Richmond Civic Hall Performing Arts Center.
Tickets are $3 in advance at Earlham's
Fine Arts Office, or $5 at the door.
The first part of the festival features performances
by each of the following Indiana high school choirs: Rushville
Consolidated, Connersville, Indianapolis Arsenal Technical and
Mishawaka Penn.
Those choirs join the Earlham Concert Choir, the Richmond Symphony
Orchestra, and soloists Randall Umstead and Ronald Berry in the
featured presentation.
Since the festival began in 1987, more than 3,000 high school
singers have participated in the biennial event.
Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)
Though Puccini is most famous for his contribution to the world
of opera through such works as La Boheme, Tosca and Madame
Butterfly, he began his musical career playing and composing
church music. He was born into a family that had supplied his native
city of Lucca, Italy with cathedral organists and composers for
four generations. At 14 he was able to deputize for organists in
the city, and he enrolled at the Instituto Musicale Pacini in 1874. It
was for his graduation from the Instituto Musicale Pacini in 1880,
at the age of 22, that he composed Messa a quattro voci,
later called Messa di Gloria because of the relative importance
of the Gloria section in the work.
