For Immediate Release:
Sept. 27, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — Enjoy an evening of choral and instrumental music as the Earlham
College Concert Choir, Madrigal Singers and Orchestra perform during
Earlham's Family Weekend Concert on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The music begins at 7:30 p.m. in Carpenter
Hall's Goddard
Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Concert Choir opens the evening with a signature
arrangement of How Can I Keep from Singing? The choir's
varied repertoire then includes a vibrant Maori welcome song, a
traditional African American spiritual (There Is a Balm in
Gilead),
a contemporary rhythmic Eastern European Cantate Domino,
a contemplative Renaissance Agnus Dei by Tomás
Luis de Victoria, and the driving Salmo 150 by Brazilian
composer Ernani Aguiar. The Concert Choir is directed by Dan Graves,
professor of music, and assisted by Noah DeLong, assistant choral
director. Accompanist for the Concert Choir is Caryl Bailey.
The Earlham Madrigal Singers offers four numbers ranging from
16th-century madrigals to 20th-century selections by Menotti and
Vaughan Williams.
Following a brief intermission, the Earlham
Orchestra — conducted by Wei Cheng, visiting assistant professor
of music — concludes the evening with Jean Sibelius' lush
and moving Finlandia and
Georges Bizet's entertaining and exciting five-movement Carmen
Suite No. 1.
A reception to meet the performers will follow the concert.
