RICHMOND, Ind. — A unique multicultural,
multimedia performance titled "Classical
Music in the Digital Age" is
an opportunity for area
music fans to experience a
collaborative concert on
March 5.
The Earlham College Artist
and Lecture Series event
begins at 7:30 p.m. at the
Civic Hall Performing Arts
Center
in Richmond.
Tickets
are $10 for adults and $5
for seniors and students,
and
may be purchased
at the Civic Hall Box Office
or at Earlham's Runyan Center.
Headlining the performance is the Ahn Trio with additional performances
by Paul Miller, also known as DJ Spooky, and the Earlham College Orchestra
under the baton of Music Director Forrest Tobey. In addition, the concert
features original compositions by Kenji Bunch and Ilaiyaraaja.
"The audience will experience something that's very uniquely
Ahn Trio," says violinist Angella Ahn, who along with sisters Maria
and Lucia work to redefine the art and architecture of chamber
music by breathing new life into the standard piano trio literature with
commissioned works from visionary composers like Bunch.
"We are constantly exploring new ways to present music that is
fresh and challenging, yet accessible," Ahn says.
The trio thrives on dissolving the barriers between
art forms. They have fused their work with that of dancers, pop singers,
and DJs such as DJ Spooky, who makes a guest appearance on the group's
latest CD A
Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac to be released on April 1.
Ahn says the trio loves to collaborate. During the concert, Miller will
perform with the trio, and Bunch will conduct the Hardware Concerto.
"The Hardware Concerto is a natural progression of the 'concerto' in
the 21st century," Ahn says. "Kenji Bunch takes all the traditional
elements of this medium and updates them to reflect the possibilities
of today. Paul will help us take our written notes to a new place
where notes get freely turned around at the spur of the moment."
Adding to the excitement will be the Earlham College Orchestra performing
an original work by Ilaiyaraaja, an award-winning film composer, singer
and lyricist. Ilaiyaraaja has composed more than 4,000 songs and provided
music for more than 800 Indian films in a career spanning 30 years.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Civic Hall Associates. Civic Hall
Performing Arts Center is adjacent to Richmond High School, 380 Hub Etchison
Parkway.
