RICHMOND, Ind. — Sweet Honey in the Rock® kicks off Earlham College's Homecoming
and Reunion Weekend festivities with their signature beautifully layered
harmonies during two evening concerts.
Sweet Honey performs at 7 and 10 p.m. on Friday,
Oct. 17, in Carpenter Hall's Goddard Auditorium. Both performances
are sign language interpreted. Tickets are available at Runyan Center
and cost $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.
Sweet Honey is an all-female a cappella vocal ensemble committed
to creating music out of the rich textures of African American legacy
and traditions, including blues, spirituals, gospel, reggae, African chants,
hip hop, ancient lullabies and jazz improvisation. Sweet Honey hopes to
open the minds and hearts of audiences by delivering positive messages
via soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms.
"This has been a very exciting and productive year for Sweet Honey
in the Rock," says group member Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell. "Our
newest CD, Experience…101, was nominated for a Grammy in 2008 and
has just received the 2008 National Parenting Publications Gold
Award."
The ensemble is busy rehearsing its newest collaboration, The Ailey Project,
with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and choreographer Hope Boykin. Sweet
Honey helped create the story, lyrics and music for the project, which
premieres in December in New York.
"Ms. Boykin has created amazing choreography to the music and has
included Sweet Honey as singers, story tellers and dancers," Barnwell
says. Sweet Honey plans to release a CD of the music entitled
Go In Grace after the premiere.
Sweet Honey In the Rock was founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973
in Washington, D.C.
