Institutional Identity System
Departmental Graphics
Some College departments may find it helpful to accompany their
messages to various outside audiences with a graphic identifier.
This is particularly true when a department offers a special
service to the external public or works primarily with an off-campus
audience.
Departmental graphics are not logos or nameplates
in and of themselves; they are used along with an existing logo
to provide the visual
identity of an individual department. Just as a particular department
is related to the College, a departmental graphic needs to be related
to the Earlham College or Earlham logo. This means, for best results,
that the departmental graphic needs to be created to accompany
the Earlham logo.
Departmental graphics are not intended for use on
stationery sets or business cards. The College already has developed
institutional
stationery/envelope designs, and these need to be used throughout
the institution to reinforce Earlham’s identity. In addition,
it is not economically feasible to print many different types of
stationery. Please consult Public Affairs if you believe you have
identified a special circumstance that might require adding a departmental
graphic to Earlham’s stationery or envelopes for a particular
communication.
Shown here are some departmental graphics currently
in use at Earlham.

How to Proceed
Public Affairs can assist your department in developing
a departmental graphic in two ways:
-
by providing advice and
-
by developing the art or by recommending an outside designer
to develop the art.
