2005 - Midwest Student Sociology Conference

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
2005 MIDWEST STUDENT SOCIOLOGY CONFERENCE

You are cordially invited to attend, and to encourage students to submit papers to, the 2005 Midwest Student Sociology Conference, to be held April 1-2, at Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana. The conference offers undergraduate students in sociology and anthropology the opportunity to present papers based on original research in a supportive and non-threatening setting. Papers from related fields, provided they are sociologically or anthropologically oriented, are also welcome. Check-in for this conference will begin at 4:00 p.m.

The conference will begin on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. with a keynote "Simkin" address by Dr. Laura Nader. Dr. Nader is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research and teaching include such areas as the comparative ethnography of law and dispute resolution and the anthropology of professional mindsets in the Middle East, Mexico, Latin America and the contemporary United States. Dr. Nader is the author of The Life of the Law: Anthropological Projects (2002), and Naked Science—Anthropological Inquiry into Boundaries, Power, and Knowledge (1996). In 1995, the Law and Society Association awarded Dr. Nader the Kalven Prize for distinguished research on law and society.

Dr. Alford Young, Jr., Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan will be the featured speaker at the luncheon on Saturday, April 2nd, at noon. Dr. Young is involved in small-scale studies of undergraduate and graduate educational practice as it pertains to racial and ethnic diversity in the student body and scholarship. He is also the author of “On the Outside Looking In: Low-Income Black Men’s Conceptions of Work Opportunity,” from Coping with Poverty: The Social Contexts of Neighborhood, Work, and Family in the African American Community (2000).

Student paper sessions on Saturday will be divided topically and typically have four to five student presenters (15 minutes each) with a faculty moderator/discussant:

  • Continental breakfast at 8:00 a.m.
  • Paper sessions beginning at 9:00 a.m.
  • Luncheon at noon with lecture by Dr. Alford Young, Jr.
  • Final paper session ending by 3:30 p.m.

Please announce the conference to faculty and students who may be interested in attending or presenting a paper. Attendees (student and faculty) and presenters need to complete and return enclosed registration form by Monday, February 28. Students need not present a paper to attend the conference, but do need to complete a registration form. Make as many copies as you need. I look forward to your participation in this exciting and rewarding event. Feel free to contact me at (765)983-1225 or email if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Deborah Jackson
