Student Profile: Sara Thorp '01
Sara Thorp is one of 60 college seniors in the country to be awarded a coveted Thomas J. Watson Fellowship for 2001. Watson winners receive $22,000 for a year of travel abroad in pursuit of indeendent research projects. Thorp, who hails from Potsdam, New York, will use her grant to study reproductive health care in Nicaragua, Bolivia and South Africa. "I'm Passionate about health care, and this is an opportunity to develop my skills as an acctivist, learning how to best use available resouces and confront unique challenges in a wide variety of situations," Sara said.
Sara has also been active with Earlham's Womyn's Center and Rainbow Tribe organization, and received the William M. Fuson Award in Sociology/Anthropology. "While neither of my parents is directly an activist in the particular way that I am an activist, they have always encouraged me to do what I think is right," Sara said. "They created a climate where I feel empowered to do anything." Looking to life after Watson Fellowship travels. Sara said she is undecided about postgraduate studies, but is considering several attractive options - earning a law degree, a master's in public health, or a doctorate in naturopathy.
