Logical diagram of the authentication structure

Applications that users interact with directly are represented by grey boxes. PAM, RADIUS, and Samba are represented as authentication transport mechanisms in that they relay the authentication credentials from the user application to the LDAP server. NIS is shown here, although it is only used for account existence and group membership authorizations (all passwords are stripped from NIS). PAM also communicates directly with LDAP in some cases.
