6. Standards
Part 1: Standards
It should be made clear that no new Web standards have been set
since 1998 at Earlham. The Web Team is, however, in the planning
process
for creating and implementing new Web standards. It is an arduous,
time-consuming process that requires much thought, consideration
and foresight to create standards that will apply to a diverse
constituency with such broad interests for using such a multifarious
medium.
That said, it should be noted that the following file and folder
naming conventions and directory organization patterns are
part of our thinking. By following these guidelines, Web
content providers
can save themselves and the Web Team a lot of extra work:
Part 2: File Names and Extensions
Note: Absolutely NO file
or folder name should include forward or backward
slashes ( \ ) ( / ). Using either in your file/folder name can
cause extreme difficulty,
as some operating systems will allow you to use these characters, while others
will not. UNIX, which is the operating system of our Web server, WILL NOT
ALLOW the use of these characters.
