4. Altering the Template
Changes NOT to Make
The template is comprised of a number of table cells that should
ideally NOT be altered. If I have already confused you, do NOT
alter the template. The Web Team will be happy to create your
customized template for you from our standard. If you understand
some technical aspects and are interested in making changes to
the template that will expedite your use of it, go on to the
Changes to Make section. Changes
to Make
We’ve established that it’s best to leave the table
heights and widths alone, so let’s move on to the recommended
template changes…
Let’s say you are updating a departmental site that has 25
Web pages in it already and you have 15 new pages to create as
well. Theoretically, it would be nice if you didn’t have
to type ––or even copy and paste–– the
header, footer, and menu items into each and every one of these
pages, wouldn’t it? This is possible, and actually quite
easy to do in Dreamweaver.
Follow the steps described in Part
3 of section 3 but do not bother
to change the Body_content area, and instead of simply saving the
document as described in Part 4 we are going to “Save As
Template.” Essentially you are creating your own Chemistry
Department or Student Government template. When prompted, enter
a name that makes sense to you ––and potentially your
colleagues, if more than just yourself will be managing this site— such
as chem_dept or stugov.
You now have a template that already has all of the standard
information; header, menu image, menu links, footer link, and
page title or
body content if applicable filled in and ready for you to begin
using to create and/or update your site. If you still wish to
further customize your personal template, please read the next
section. At Your Own Risk
Now that you have created your own template from the Official
EC Template, perhaps you want to play with the style sheet
settings, the page width, the color scheme, or some other
aspect of the template. This is possible, but not recommended
for a number of reasons. If you would like an explanation
or some assistance with this, please join the Webdev list ––found
on the Web Team Web site, Resources–– and submit
your question(s) there or e-mail webprojects@earlham.edu.
If you choose to make your own alterations and something
goes wrong, the Web Team cannot be held responsible, nor
can it be expected that we will immediately address your
problem, depending on our existing project load.
