History and Explanation

Since 1990, Action Against Rape has been an active student-led organization at Earlham College. We are recognized by the college, and our funding comes primarily from the Student Organizations Council (SOC) branch of student government on a semester-by-semester basis. Every fall, we organize and run Rape Awareness Week, and we have traditionally planned and led Take Back the Night every spring. AAR was responsible for the initiation of the Sexual Assault Suvivors' program and the installation of the lamps illuminating the Heart of Earlham College.

Our central goal is the elimination of sexual violence, and we strive to raise awareness about sexual violence and how it can be prevented using a diverse range of methods. We believe that education is the key to prevention, and that successful prevention involves comprehensive community effort in fighting the roots of sexual violence. For our efforts at reducing sexual violence, our work has been recognized for excellence by the Genesis Women's Shelter of the YWCA in Richmond, Indiana.
