For Immediate Release:
May 13, 2009
RICHMOND, Ind. — Four Earlham College baseball players were honored on Wednesday by the North Coast Athletic Conference for their performance during the 2009 season.
Junior Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) headlined the group as he was named All-NCAC First Team as a catcher.
Sophomores Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN/Madison-Grant) and Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider) were on the second team, while senior Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) received honorable mention.
This is the third straight spring Carr has been honored by the NCAC. He was second team in 2007 and 2008.
Carr finished this season as the Earlham’s career batting average leader at .397 in three years. He had 55 hits this spring, which is a single-season record and set the career record for doubles with 33 and the single-season mark with 17. He also broke the single-season record for runs scored with 37 runs.
Morrical was also a second team choice a year ago. The third baseman knocked in 10 runs in the final Denison doubleheader, which put him at 38 RBIs for a new single-season record. He batted .369, which was second best on the team.
Painter was named Earlham’s Pitcher of the Year after leading the team with a 4.55 ERA and topping the squad with a 4-3 record. He led the team with four complete games and was also second on the team with 45 strikeouts.
Anderson, who played several positions, is on the honorable mention list for the third consecutive year. He was third on the squad in victories with three and topped the pitching staff with 47 strikeouts in 12 games. At the plate, Anderson had the third best batting average for the Quakers at .359, while leading the team in stolen bases (14) and triples (5).
Some history
This is the second time since Earlham joined the NCAC for the 1990 season that the Quakers had four players receive all-conference honors.
Carr, Anderson, Eric Sturgeon and Kyle Gallagher were selected in 2007. Carr and Sturgeon were second team with Anderson and Gallagher receiving honorable mention.
Carr is the fourth player to earn a spot on the first team. Jay Dace (1992), Bobby Ebright (1997) and Michael Rothrock (2000) are the other Earlham players to make the top squad.
There are also four players who have been on an all-conference team three years in a row. Along with the previously mentioned Carr and Anderson, Ebright (1995-97) and Steve Pearson (2002-04) are the other two.
