Owens Nominated for National Football Award

RICHMOND, Ind. — Earlham College senior Chris Owens was nominated on Thursday for a national honor sponsored by the Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association.
Owens is one of 106 players from all levels of college football now eligible for the Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team.
“What a wonderful recognition for a great young man,” Earlham College Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “Chris is one of the finest football players I have ever coached and with all of his abilities on the football field they pale in comparison to Chris as a person.”
Now in its 18th year, the team honors players who make contributions to their communities in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.
“Chris always places the welfare of others before his own,” Keesling said. “I am very proud and honored to have him as a leader in our football program at Earlham College.”
There will be 11 members on a team comprised of NCAA Div. 1-A players and then another squad of 11 players the remaining divisions.
Many Hours of Service
Owens has completed over 1,500 hours of community service since coming to Earlham in 2005.
Here is a list of the organizations volunteered for in the Richmond area: Townsend Community Center, Reid Hospital and Health Services, Pauline Trueblood, Richmond State Hospital, Wernle Children’s Home, Make-A-Wish Foundation, March of Dimes Foundation, United Way, Galileo Charter Schools, Habitat for Humanity, Upward Bound and Earlham Explore-A-College.
On the Field
After missing 2007 with a knee injury, Owens is in his fifth year with the Quakers. Last season, he had 59 catches for 702 yards with six touchdowns to earn a spot on the All-North Coast Athletic Conference Second Team.
In his career, Owens has 130 receptions for 1,927 yards and 18 scores as he closes in the Earlham records set by former teammate Joe White from 2004-07 (177 catches, 2,543 yards, 27 touchdowns).
Earlham opens the season with a home game against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Darrell Beane Stadium, which is now in third season.
