Shaw Named MVP in Field Events

DELAWARE, Ohio — Earlham College junior Chris Shaw picked up one of the major awards during the North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University as the meet concluded on Saturday.

Shaw (Anderson, IN/Pendleton Heights) was named the Most Valuable Performer for Field Events. On Saturday, he finished seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 123’4.”

However, it was Shaw’s performance on Friday that put him in contention for the honor. He won the discus for the third straight year, while finishing fourth in the shot put.

Shaw's winning toss in the discus was a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 159’0.” His throw in the shot put was 47’7.”

Sophomore Austin Manahan (Orlando, FL/University) had the best finish for the Quakers on Saturday. Manahan was fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 44’0¾.”

Sophomore Chad Wertman (Holland, IN/Southridge) added a fifth-place finish to his weekend with a throw of 125’11” in the hammer. Wertman won the shot put on Friday. Senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 161’6.”

The 400-meter relay squad of sophomore Lenden Bowsman (New Castle, IN/New Castle), sophomore Ben Randall (Milford, OH/Milford), junior Bo Braun (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and first-year L.V. Plummer (Eads, TN/Christian Brothers) finished fifth with a time of 44.09 seconds. The same group later was eighth in the 1,600-meter relay. Braun and Plummer switched placed in the lineup as the team posted a time of 3:26.97.

Earlham ended the day in eighth place overall out of nine teams, while Ohio Wesleyan won the championship.
