All 20 of the border studies students arrived safely in El Paso, TX on the afternoon and evening of August 20th to begin their fall semester on the Border. Orientation week was packed full of activities that would help get them acquainted with El Paso, Juarez, UTEP, UACJ and just general life on the border. All the students spent their first night in a hotel in El Paso, enjoying dinner at La Nortena, and a much needed southwest rainstorm.
The first full day or orientation started with a tour of UTEP and then everyone piled into vans and cars to make the first official crossing into Juarez. Luckily, it was an easy crossing and we had lunch and then got ready to meet the host families. After a wonderful reception and lots of excitement the students went home to spend their first night with their new families. The next few days of orientation were filled with getting orientated to UACJ (Universidad Autonomo de Ciudad Juarez) visiting a few field study sights like CETLAC (where Marta Popadiak will be working) and Casa Amiga (where Liz Arginteanu and Laura Nitti will be working), touring a maquila, and eating a lot of delicious food. The group crossed the international bridge into the US together a few times (both walking and in the vans) to get used to it (many of the students will cross back and forth almost every day during the school week). The orientation week ended with a big picnic, where all the host families and students came together to eat, play games, and just be together relaxing after a very long week
