Big Bend Trip 2003

On Nov 7 , 13 students and 3 staff members headed to Big Bend National Park. On Saturday morning we prepared for a canoe trip. We met our guides Darren, Patrick and Bill. and a brief lesson on how to maneuver a canoe, as well as on river safety, we jumped in our boats and were off. It was a gorgeous paddle through the Santa Elena Canyon, with the canyon walls on each side.

When we stopped for lunch on the Mexican side of the river, most of the students went on a little walk up to a hot spring kind of waterfall, which most of them got in. Then on the way back to lunch several of them decided to go through a large mud pit, instead of around it. There were several very muddy people, and one student temporarily lost her shoe in the mud, until it was rescued. All in all, everyone enjoyed the water and mud.

Later, after thanking our friendly guides, we headed out to Study Butte and drove back to our campsite. There was a lunar eclipse that night, so as the sun set, we all watched the moon be eclipsed by the earth’s shadow. It was amazing and we were in a great place to see it.

The next day we drove to Study Butte for our sunset horseback ride. At the Big Bend Stables we got helmets and each person was given a lesson in steering, stopping and going. Once everyone was on a horse, we rode out across the desert. It was a lovely ride—we rode up Ocotillo Mesa, and then back down again. After checking out some petroglyphs, we turned around to go back to the stables, and the sun was setting in front of us. It was gorgeous!

The next day we got up early to return.

Overall the trip was great!!!
