The Border Studies Program is pleased to offer short term seminars to EL
Paso/Juárez area during the spring and summer terms for interested classes
and groups. Please contact the Border Studies staff for more information.
This past year, Border Studies hosted groups from Kansas University, Avalon High School, Davidson University, Lewis and Clark University, and Connecticut College. Check out some of the scenes below.
Lewis and Clark University
Seven students enrolled in a "Borderlands" course at Lewis and Clark set out to listen to and experience the border for seven days.
Casa Puente, the group's home for a week, is also home to the Border Studies Program office. In addition to Casa Puente, Border Studies staff can arrange home stays for short-term immersion groups.
For the Lewis and Clark students, Casa Puente provided a space for them to come together after working at field sites and both process and reflect upon their experiences.
The group worked on a number of small-group, community-based research projects. They created strong connections with staff and individuals at various non-profit organizations on both sides of the border.
The students broke into groups of two, and volunteered at a number of organizations including Casa Amiga, in Ciudad Juárez. Here a student prepares to enter this field study site.
"The project itself was a perfect 'service learning' experience. It provided us with a research opportunity and was directly beneficial to the organization." ~Lewis and Clark student
Students received a multifaceted understanding of the border by traveling to various locations on both sides of the border including a maquila, the U.S. Border Patrol Museum, and Colonia Anapra.

"Every interaction we had was insightful; a great experience"
