Independent Research Project Planning Guide

An independent research project is required for both the chemistry and biology/chemistry interdepartmental major. This may be accomplished through any of the following four options:

  • Independent Research in Chemistry: Register for CHEM486 (Student Research in Chemistry) for at least two credit hours (the two-credit hour requirement may be spread over two semesters). Biology/Chemistry interdepartmental majors may alternatively register for BIOL486 (Student Research in Biology). In either case, the approval of the faculty member with whom you wish to do research is required. You must arrange your project with the faculty member well in advance, i.e. no later than the normal registration period in the semester prior to the semester in which you are planning to take the course. (For example, if you wanted to do an independent research project during fall semester 2006, you would need to seek arrangements with the faculty member no later than the three-week registration period during spring semester 2006.)
  • An approved* summer research experience, on- or off-campus.
  • An approved* Ford/Knight Research Project.
  • A semester-long off-campus program, such as the Oak Ridge Research Semester.

Careful early planning with your advisor should be done to determine the best option for the research experience.

A public presentation of your work is required. This may be in the form of an approved poster session (i.e. the Earlham Undergraduate Research Conference) or a research seminar given to the department.

*Approval can be obtained from the Chemistry Department. Consult a faculty member for more information.
