Local Laws

US citizens are subject to the laws of the country in which they are traveling. If arrested abroad, a US. citizen must go through the foreign legal process for being charged or indicted, prosecuted, possibly convicted and sentenced, and for any appeals process. This process may differ significantly from that of the US. and the same protections available to the individual under US. law may not apply.

Penalties for breaking the law can be more severe than in the United States for similar offenses. Persons violating Spanish law, even unknowingly, may be expelled, arrested or imprisoned. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs in the Spain are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and heavy fines. Air travelers to and from the Spain should be aware that penalties against in-flight alcohol-related crimes are stiff and have been enforced. Do not accept drugs or buy drugs from anyone!!

Please remember, also, that your actions reflect on Earlham and the program as well as possibly putting your host family in jeopardy. Buying or using illegal drugs in Spain would jeopardize your safety and risk the well-being and good standing of the Earlham Program in Spain. You will be sent home for any such activity.
