Yoga with Ken

What is Yoga?
Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline that has been practiced for over 5,000 years. This discipline has been passed from teacher to student through a rigorous training program.

“Yoga” means union, the connecting of mind, body and spirit. This may be seen in the practice of concentration: doing one thing at a time, rather than ten things at once. Practice typically increases awareness of the relation between mind and body. This may heal problems that were caused by “doing” without thinking.

Yoga offers a range of practices ranging from gentle physical exercise for beginners or those with injuries to more intensive exercises and meditative practices for those who are more physically advanced and mentally disciplined.

What can Yoga do for me?
As a physical discipline, yoga offers the three major benefits of exercise including:

  • Increased strength
  • Improved flexibility
  • Aerobic conditioning
This will increase energy levels, endurance, and metabolism, leaking to a more physically fit body. Research finds it useful in weight loss, strengthening the back, and improving posture. It may reduce high blood pressure, cholesterol levels and the risk of heart attack.

As a mental discipline, yoga and related meditative practices can help to quiet the “chatter” and racing thoughts of the mind. Research suggests that this may:

  • Increase concentration
  • Improve depression and anxiety
  • Assist in abstinence from addictions
As a Doctor of Psychology, Ken will often direct the class to explore how postures relate to these real-life issues.

As a spiritual discipline, yoga offers practices that will support any religious or ethical tradition. This practice encourages discipline, motivation, personal awareness, and honesty. Classes will also stress the importance of reducing harmful habits such as improper diet, laziness, and judgmental thinking.

Ken’s Kripalu style yoga classes are typically smaller in size and tailored to the requests of the students. The classes will help you to deepen your understanding of how the postures an practices relate to everyday life. The principles are taught so that you can use lessons learned when you go home to improve the quality of your job, relationships and health.
