Important information to read BEFORE you
arrive for Explore-A-College!

Studying outside on The Heart.
Books
- Since all classes vary in content and instruction, the text
and/or materials required will also vary. Prices for text/materials
range from $10 to $120.
- You will
be able to purchase your texts in the Earlham College Bookstore
on the day of registration.
Campus Safety and Security
- The Earlham College Campus Safety and Security Office
is set up to help ensure the health and safety of the community.
- The office is located near the Maintenance building
and is open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the week.
- There are
security officers on duty 24 hours a day every day of the year.
- Matters
of health and safety are of paramount importance in any residential
setting.
- The Summer
Conference Office, the Campus Safety and Security Office, and
the Maintenance Department have worked together to establish
systems and procedures to ensure the protection of Earlham
summer participants.
- Each residential
unit has strategically located fire alarms and smoke detectors.
- Fire and
tornado emergency procedures are posted by all telephones and
in public areas.
Emergency
Telephone Numbers
- In case
of an emergency in which a family needs to communicate with a
participant, please call one of the following numbers:
- Explore-A-College Office: 765-983-1330 or 1462 from
8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Director's
cell phone: 765-914-1783, 24 hours a day
- Runyan Center Desk: 765-983-1580, 24 hours a day
- Campus Safety and Security: 765-983-1400, 24 hours
a day.
Extra Expenses
- Participants are responsible for paying for off-campus
events, extra food and snacks (pizza, ice cream, etc.), group photograph, and bookstore purchases (souvenirs, supplies, etc.)
Food Service
- All participants eat in a central dining room in
Earlham Hall. The College food service provides a wide selection
of food, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options.
- Please make sure the Director knows if the participant
has special dietary needs.
- Proper attire and footwear must be worn in the dining
hall at all times..
Health Services
- Please
make sure to complete and turn in the Emergency Information
Form. one copy is kept in the residential hall and
another with the Director at all times.
- A nurse is on call at all times.
- Health
issues and concerns should be brought to the attention of
the Director and Student Program Assistant
immediately.
- Many of the student staff have recent First
Aid training.
- In addition, trained campus security officers are
on call 24 hours a day.
- Reid Hospital, a large regional hospital, is located
three miles from the Earlham campus.

Moving into the dorm!
Housing
- Explore-A-College participants will be housed in
a regular residential dormitory.
- Female and male participants will be housed on separate
halls.
- There are shared bathrooms on each hall.
- Current Earlham students serve as dorm counselors.
- Most rooms are double occupancy; a very few are
triple or suite.
- Each double
room comes equipped with two single beds, two dressers, two
desks, a bookcase, and a mirror. There
is an overhead room light, but no desk lamp. Remember, this is a "bare" dorm room.
- A blanket and a pillow will be provided to each participants. Students must bring sheets for a single bed, towels, and washcloth.
- Students are charged for any damages to the room
or its contents that occur during their stay.
Keys and Access Cards
- Each participant will be issued a dorm room key
that unlocks the main dorm door and the individual dorm room.
- A $40 deposit
is to be paid separately at the time of registration..
- If paying by check, this must be a separate check
from the one used to pay for the program or books.
- The deposit fee will be refunded at Runyan Center
desk when the participant checks out of College housing at the end of the program..
- If a student
loses the room key, the $40 deposit will not be refunded.
Laundry Facilities
- Participants may use the washers and dryers located
in the residence hall. Bring laundry detergent and coins.
Packing List
- Earlham
College has a casual environment.
- Clothing: Shorts and t-shirts are acceptable
for nearly everything. Bring at least one pair of long pants, a long sleeve
shirt, socks, and tennis shoes for certain activities (community service and roller skating).
- Linens: Sheet set for a single bed, towel, and washcloth.
- Toiletries: Soap, shampoo, toothpast, toothbrush, etc.
- List of other suggested items:
- Alarm clock
- Cell phone, if available - communicate with your family!
- Desk lamp
- Insect repellent/insect bite medication
- Jacket/sweatshirt
- Laundry detergent/laundry bag
- Notebook
- Pens/pencils
- Personal medications
- Personal sports equipment
- Sandals/flip-flops
- Sunscreen
- Swimsuit
- Umbrella
- Please DO NOT bring personal computers or video
game systems.

Postal Services
- The College
has complete postal facilities located in Runyan Center where
letters and packages may be sent and
received.
- Letters
or packages mailed to participants should be addressed as follows:
"Participant's Name"

Telephone Service
- Participants may use the dorm room telephone to
receive incoming calls or to call campus extensions.
- Participants may make long distance telephone calls
by using personal cell phone, a calling card, or a pay telephone.
- The dorm
room telephone extension will be provided to families at registration.
- Students will be billed for any damage to a campus
telephone.
- Students may bring personal cell phones but must
turn them off during class.
Time and Weather
- Richmond
observes Eastern Daylight time - we are on the same time
as New
York City.
- Indiana
weather ranges from hot and humid to chilly and rainy. Check
the long-range forecast for eastern Indiana
in order to have a better idea of what to pack.
