The Friends Association of Higher Education" will have its 2008 conference at the Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre in Birmingham England, June 19-22, 2008. The theme is Where Faith and Practice Meet.
In an effort to reduce the number of contributed sessions that meet simultaneously, we have increased the number of time periods available for contributed work. These sessions range from 75 to 100 minutes, with longer sessions generally being reserved for sessions with multiple presenters. To allow new participants, who may want to participate in a panel but not know enough other attenders to form panels on their own, this year the Program Committee propose four panel topics. These panels with at least four accepted presentations will be scheduled.
How does the Simplicity Testimony inform the life and Work of Friends in Academe?
Are we still, collectively, "a peculiar people" or just quirky individuals, like many other academics?
Roundtable of Friends who are historians (and may or may not be Quaker historians)
Other disciplinary roundtables can be proposed. These will require a critical mass of scholars, so for fields less represented than history among FAHE members, one might propose a group of disciplines, such as "the natural sciences." Inviting a few others scholars in your chosen discipline or family of disciplines would be a good idea. Contact cw07@onlineethics.org or fahe@quaker.org if you need help identifying other scholars in your discipline or family of disciplines.
One-page (300-500 word) submissions enable the Program Committee to understand what you propose. In the case of participation in one of the panels proposed above, it would be a draft of your panel contribution.
Please send your submissions by email, including a title, presenter's name and contact information (especially email address to be used), and type of presentation to Caroline Whitbeck, cw07@onlineethics.org when you have them ready but in any case before November 1. The Program Committee will review them soon after they are received to accept them or suggest revisions at an early stage. Presenters may then be able to apply to their institutions for travel funds.
Woodbrooke can accommodate fewer guests than can the colleges where FAHE conferences have been previously held. Here is the the reservation/booking form. Note that to receive priority for the limited number of on-campus accomodations, FAHE members and participants at the 2007 FAHE Conference, and QHA and QSRA members should send their reservations by 31 December 2007.
This page is fully accessible to users of text-based agents and non-Javascript browsers.
Late submissions will be considered, if there is remaining space in the program without scheduling more than five sessions concurrently.
