Any student interested in French is invited to spend a semester or year on an off-campus program. Programs are open to all students after one year of language study. Earlham recognizes financial aid for participation in one Earlham- or GLCA/ACM-administered program. All programs include a 1-credit on-campus orientation.
• France: Students strengthen linguistic skills while exploring French history, art, and politics through study in three distinctive regions of France: language and culture in Nantes; apprenticeships with local artisans in Béarn; and courses taught by French faculty in Paris. Homestays throughout. Offered fall semester every 2-3 years.
• Martinique: Students examine developments in Francophone literature and Creole culture, language, and arts while living in the capital Fort-de-France and traveling throughout the island. Courses are taught by professors from the local university and the Earlham faculty leader. Homestays throughout. Offered spring semester every 2-3 years.
• Senegal (Great Lakes College Association): Students take courses at the Baobab Center and the French Institute for Foreign Students and enroll directly in courses at the Université de Dakar. Students also undertake an independent study project on topics such as women’s issues or relief organizations. Homestays included. Year-long, every year.
