Haiti program photo gallery

Welcome

to Earlham College's Haiti program photo gallery. Beginning in 2000 and hopefully continuing on an annual basis, Earlham's AAAS and PAGS departments have offered a one month May term class in which students study for several weeks in various parts of Haiti. The program includes home-stays in urban and rural areas of Haiti, visits to important historical sites, and many other opportunities to both learn about the culture and make personal contact with residents of Haiti.

Purpose:

This gallery exists to display photos which the author intends to show a more positive view of Haiti than is generally presented in mainstream media. Nowhere on this site should you find fund-raiser photos which show people at their most pitiable and debased. That work has already been done and overdone. Instead, we hope that these images will present a face of Haiti that is often ignored. Haiti has much to be proud of in its history, its land, and its people. With any luck, some of that will show through in these photos.

Credits:

This web site was created by Andrew C. Dingman, EC class of 2001. Unless otherwise noted, all photographs appearing here were taken by the author while participating in the 2001 Haiti program. The program was lead by Aletha Stahl, who also suggested the gallery, and Shenita Piper. Thanks also go to Earlham College Computing Services for hosting services.
