Animal Awareness
Bossie: the Guardian of this page
 and Vegetarianism
Why I am against animal testing Not easy on the eyes!
If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they don't want to hear.

Some Prose and poetry to open your mind
Why?
The ultimate question. This is a wonderful page for answering that question which even vegetarians ask once and a while.

Vegetartian-Based Diets
A good review for those who don't as well as those who do eat meat (vegans too!). This is a nutritional and conceptual overview.

If you could see or feel the suffering
you wouldn't think twice.
Give back life.
Don't eat meat.
    -Kim Basinger

The cost of eating meat
I think this is more than I make in a year, and probably more than you make.

Some facts on meat and animal products
from Diet for a New America by John Robbins.

Twenty-eight Reasons to stop eating meat
I think these are taken from Diet for a New America as well. This page is different from the one above because it has a few other resources.

What is it that should trace the insuperable line?
...The question is not,
Can they reason? nor Can they talk?
but, Can they suffer?
-Jeremy Bentham (a utilitarian philosopher)

Are Humans designed to eat meat?
No.

Vegan Links
A very large, boring site. It has the advantage focusing on vegans, who are not specifically represented as much as they should be. The page is hard to follow and lacks a good color scheme.

Nothing will benefit human health and increase
chances for survival of life on
Earth as much as the evolution to a
vegetarian diet.
-Albert Einstein

Vegemania!   Download
I have not checked this out, but it says that it is a vegetarian cookbook on steroids, or rather a vegetarian cookbook on high protein, soy-based, carrot, prune shakes!
No truth appears to me more
evident than that beasts are endowed
with thought and reason as well as men.
The arguments are in this case so obvious,
that they never escape
the most stupid and ignorant.
   -David Hume
Why Hindus are vegetarian
Self explanatory

The animals of the world exist for their own reasons.
They were not made for humans any more than
black people were made for whites or women for men.
                                                                                    -Alice Walker

Clenbuterol A drug for muscle and animal development, harmful to both bovines and humans.
Write to Oprah Winfrey A place to send mail to Oprah, telling her how you feel about her lawsuit. It also has a good overview for those who are not aware of her legal situation.
VegSource A source for the Oprah and Howard debate, as well as other links and recipes. It also has a lot of not-so-vegetarian links.
Witness Testimony A page which has a referenced index of the McLibel trial.

What the companies show us chicken life is like This was taken from a homepage of a company that makes feeders for chickens.
What the reality is for these chicks This picture was from an animal awareness page

Battery Hens This describes live inside a hen house
Egg Production An excellent link Remember this is what happens to half of the chickens, the other half are killed, tossed into dumpsters to suffocate. This page also shows us how "free ranged" eggs are not much better.
To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body. -Mahatma Gandhi
Those who fight for animal liberation
What the reality is for 25-30% of factory farm animals Another picture from a page focused on animal liberation
Peter Singer: All Animals Are Equal A summary of his article that you can read in a few minuets.

Animal People This is a great site for news and research
I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or
doesn't...The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further. -Mark Twain
PETA The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is a huge source for information on animal rights. There has been some controversey about PETA recently, as they have used sexually explicite advertising. I don't know where I stand on this issue but my initial reaction is that objectification is what they are trying to fight.
Feminists for Animal Rights An  ecofeminist page. This is a good example of how ecofeminism combats oppression. It includes a powerful photo gallery which strengthens the woman/nature connection. This page also discusses the PETA nudity controversey.
Animal Liberation Front Let's get radical! The ALF is a militaristic liberation organization.
ALF Action  A fox saved by ALFThis is a good representation of what the ALF does.
What's Wrong With McDonalds A bruchure which got a few people sued for $90, 000.
...the deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadows, the body heat of the pony and man--all belong to the same family... The White Man must treat the beasts of this land as his brothers. -Chief Seattle
Farm Sanctuary A group started by a horrific and wonderful story about Hilda, a sheep left for dead. Read about her story.  Contains some nice links and information. This page has a good collection of pictures, which lend to reflection.
COWS!
The shriek was followed by another, louder and yet more agonizing. . . for once started upon that journey, the hog never came back. One by one the men hooked up the hogs and slit their throats. There was a line of hogs with squeals and lifeblood ebbing away.. until at last each vanished into a huge vat of boilin water (some still alive). The hogs were so innocent. They came so very trustingly. They were so very human in their protests. They had done nothing to deserve it.
Upton Sinclair in The Jungle (written after his investigation of Hormel in Austin Minnesota)

Resources for those who are vegetarian or vegan
A list of animal ingredients This is huge, but it is needed by those who are serious.
A GREAT guide to buying Leather Alternatives.  A good resource for shoes and accessories.
Books A vegetarian/vegan reading list
Companies that test on animals These are to be shunned. A PETA source.
Companies that do NOT test on animals This does not mean that they do not use animal products.
A PETA source.
