Welcome to the real
world!
You
have just entered Earlham College's HHMI Summer Bridge Program Homepage,
aka the program "snapshot".
Overview of the Program
This is the homepage for the Howard
Hughes Medical Institute Summer Bridge Program, better known as
HHMI. This program lasts three weeks and throughout the course of
it students work on different areas of science. This year the program's
emphasis was on the physics and biology of proteins within a cell's
mitochondria. Specifically, F0-F1 ATP synthase (a protein used to
produce energy) was studied. Students spend the majority of their
time either attending lectures or working in the lab. Also, students
employ computer technology by using programs such as Microsoft Excel,
DreamWeaver, Swiss PDB viewer, and Power Point presentations.
Now everyone has heard the saying
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Well, the
same applies for the members of the Hughes Bridge program. Weekend
activities included viewing movies such as: Seabiscuit, League of
Extraordinary Gentlemen, BadBoys II, and SWAT. Other activities
included a trip to Cincinnati's Imax theatre, a scavenger hunt,
and a trip to Paramount King's Island Amusement Park. Also, ultimate
frisbee was a very popular sport for the duration of the program
and most students participated in several games.
Overview of the People
Every year 12 people are chosen to
participate (incoming freshmen and sophomores) in the Bridge Program.
This year the twelve students were: Raymond Riddle, Justin Colanese,
Kari Wilder-Romans, Kasey Taylor, Tessa Bricker, Claire Lawson,
Arielle Yorczyk, Logan Giles, Matt Hogan, Nick Matthew, Matt Peoples,
and Caroline Hackett. Hillary Dishmon, Seth Hopper, and Munirih
Qualls were the three TA's and the two leading professors were Dr.
Amy Mulnix, professor of biology, and Dr. John Howell, professor
of physics.
