About the Department
| Students
of History at Earlham learn the habits of thought
and standards of excellence that distinguish good
critical thinking and analyzing. These important
skills transfer to any course, any field of study
and any career that students pursue after graduating
from Earlham. |
|
In everyday language, the study of History is
the systematic study of the past. At Earlham, students of History
discover a deeper understanding of today's world
as well as extend their experience by discovering past worlds.
Earlham students of History also learn the discipline of critical
inquiry into the human past. They consider not only what has
happened,
but why it has happened. Our study of History
is informed by Earlham's Quaker roots which help us understand
a significant idea: peaceful co-existence requires tolerance,
understanding and a rigorous pursuit of the truth about the past.
At Earlham, students benefit from studying at a liberal arts college with a low student-faculty ratio. Students learn in
ideally-sized classes, where faculty and students have the opportunity to get to know one another. Although there is no single
dominant mode of teaching, lively discussion among students and faculty plays an important role in all History courses at
Earlham. Faculty collaborate regularly with students in various research projects funded by grants from the Ford and Knight
foundations. First- and second-year students also have opportunities to work with upperlevel students in classes and on projects.

The History Department at Earlham offers courses in a wide
range of fields. Students begin the study of History with introductory
survey courses; further study in small upperlevel
classes examines themes within specified time periods. Students
choose from a broad curriculum with a rich variety of offerings.
The History Department offers courses focusing on the study of
North America, Europe, Latin America, China, Japan,
Africa and Russia. The Department also offers courses with a
unique focus,
such as the History of Labor, History of Gender and Sexuality,
Jewish History, African American History, Women's History, the
History of Vietnam, the History of Terrorism and the History
of Quakerism. Our faculty share their expertise with interdisciplinary
programs such as Women's Studies, African American
Studies, Peace and Global Studies (PAGS) and Education.
