About the Program
The Journalism program at Earlham helps students from all
disciplines to understand, through first-hand experience, the important
role journalists play in our society. For students interested in
journalism as a career, it also offers a wide variety of
classroom and practical experiences in print and broadcast news
that allow
students to fully explore the many exciting career opportunities
in the field. Students are introduced
to emerging as well as traditional approaches
to news coverage, including basic news reporting, investigative
reporting, civic (or public) journalism, and literary journalism
(sometimes called
creative nonfiction).
Through core courses in the Earlham's Journalism program
students learn to:
- Gather information from a diverse range of sources, then prepare news
and feature stories, reviews and opinion pieces.
- Edit stories, checking for grammar, Associated Press style, thoroughness,
fairness and ethical story framing.
- Take news photos and prepare them for publication using both traditional
and digital darkroom techniques.
- Create informational graphics to complement news stories employing computer
programs used in most professional newsrooms.
- Write headlines, design pages and lay out documents, gaining proficiency
in software commonly used in professional newsrooms.
