SOIL SAMPLES SUBSTANTIATE TSUNAMI SIZE - Andy Moore, Assistant Professor of Geology and member of the Japanese Studies Faculty, recently went with Earlham students to Japan on a summer study research project program.
COLIN HAYWOOD '08 RECEIVES FULBRIGHT FOR JAPANESE TRANSLATION PROJECT A Fulbright Scholarship will allow Colin Haywood ’08 the opportunity to contribute Japanese literature to the English-speaking world. During the yearlong project, Haywood hopes to translate Higuchi Ichiyo’s poetry. Eventually he plans to translate the author’s complete works.
In July 2008, the Japanese Studies Program received a grant from the Freeman Foundation for $200,000 over the next 3 years. The grant activities will focus on the following:
1. Faculty development and curricular enhancement with the goal of adding new courses in Japanese Studies or a Japan component in existing courses.
2. Creation of May Term programs in Japan and support for student participants
3. Hiring of a post-doctoral fellow in Japanese Studies to teach 3 courses a year.
4. Japanese Studies conference at Earlham for GLCA and ACM faculty members. Possible topics include visual culture, media studies, popular culture.
5. Conferences at Earlham for high school Japanese language teachers and their students in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.
