Provides articles not only on history and politics, but also the development of ideas, customs, and institutions.

Encyclopedia of Women in American History
Reference: HQ1410 .E53 2002
Divided into three chronologically arranged volumes. Each volume includes historical surveys and thematic essays on central issues and political changes affecting women's lives during the period. These are followed by A-Z entries on significant events and social movements, laws, court cases and more, as well as profiles of notable American women from all walks of life and all fields of endeavor.

Women in Early America:Struggle, Survival, and Freedom in a New World

Focuses on the activities and experiences of women iin early American from 1607 to the outbreak of the War of 1812. Some entries discuss famous, named women while others discuss the lives of ordinary women, addressing issues such as aging, childbirth, and household responsibilities. In addition to the role of Anglo-American women, the experiences of African, French, Dutch, and Native American women are also discussed.

American Periodicals Series (APS) Online
Full text of over 1100 magazines that began publishing in the USA between 1740 and 1900, including special interest and general magazines, literary journals, children's and women's magazines, and more. Coverage extends to 1940 at the latest.

British Periodicals
Full text of hundreds of magazines published in Britain from the 1680s to the 1910s.

 In addition to "Keywords Anywhere" searches, try browsing Subject Headings. Try Searching for the Subject "Great Britain" combined with combinations of other keywords, specific to your topic. The asterix, *, at the end of terms will search for all variations that start with the letters before. For example: "charit*" will retrieve records containing, charity, charities, charitable, etc.

Websites

American History to 1865
Includes sites arranged chronologically from the Colonial period through the Civil War and several biographical sites. Created and maintained by University of Washington Libraries.

American Memory
The Library of Congress has a growing collection of digitized primary documents MOSTLY on American history.  You can search the collection by time period, place and broad topic. Library of Congress subject headings as used in the CSUSM catalog will also work in this database. May also browse a chronological list of documents.

Early America
Includes primary source materials from eighteenth century America.

The Gilder Lehrman Institutue of American History
Contains more than 60,000 documents, including manuscript letters, diaries, maps, photographs, printed books and pamphlets, ranging from 1493 through modern times. Rich with materials from the Revolutionary period.

Making of America
Contains some 360,000 pages of original printed text from several thousand volumes of primary sources related to the development of US infrastructure during the antebellum period and reconstruction.
