United States Depository Ready Reference Sources
A convenient arrangement of frequently-used government documents (e.g. Consumer Price Indexes, Budget of the US Government, CDC Travel Information). Maintained by Columbia University.

GPO Access: A Service of the US Government Printing Office
Links to some of the most important federal government information, including searchable, full-text versions of the Federal Register, Congressional Record, Congressional Bills, and US Government Manual.

GovSpot
Contains reliable general government information. This is a commercial site, so it will contain advertising.

Constitution of the United States of America
Along with the text, this site offers analysis and interpretation of the US Supreme Court decisions that dealt with core constitutional issues. Also included are proposed amendments not ratified, congressional acts, state measures, and municipal ordinances deemed unconstitutional, and acts of Congress held unconstitutional.

United States Code
Contains the Legal Information Institute's hypertext version of the full US Code and other important legal documents.

geodata.gov: US Maps and Data
A gateway to goverment-produced geospatial data. Use it to find data and map services, make a map, browse community information, and more.

United States (Statistics)

FedStats
The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy maintains this site to provide easy access to a range of statistics and information produced by more than 70 US federal government agencies.

Bureau of the Census
The official site includes access tools, current economic indicators, and more. For interactive mapping and data retrieval of 1990 US Census data only, try Columbia University's SEDAC Demographic Data Viewer. For exporting to spreadsheets or to create GIS maps, try the Census Bureau's American FactFinder.

Bureau of Labor Statistics
An extensive collection of statistics and reports broadly related to employment and economics.

National Science Foundation Science & Engineering Statistics
Statistics on the status of science & engineering in the United States, including education, employment, funding, policies.

Statistical Resources on the Web
This University of Michigan Library site offers hundreds of statistical files from a number of primarily governmental sources. Included are US statistics as well as those for foreign countries and trade.

The Gallup Organization
One of the nation's leading pollsters shares information from opinion polls, special reports, trends, and social audits dating from 1997. Also shares information about poll techniques.

United States (Congress)

CQ Weekly Report
The Congressional Quarterly (CQ) weekly magazine on government, politics, and commerce. "Readers get in-depth reports on issues looming on the congressional horizon, plus a complete wrap up the previous week's news, including the status of bills in play, behind-the-scenes maneuvering, committee and floor activity, debates and all roll-call votes", 1983 to present.

CQ Almanac
Coverage of the people, elections, legislation, and controversies in the US Congress from 1945-2006, with in-depth review and analysis of legislation and policy for each year, organized by policy area and comprehensive roll call votes for all major legislation.

United States House of Representatives
"Provides public access to legislative information as well as information about Members, Committees, and Organizations of the House and to other U.S. government information resources."

United States Senate
Offers information about the "members of the Senate, Senate Committees, and Senate leadership and support offices" as well as "general background information about U.S. Senate legislative procedures, Senate facilities in the Capitol Building, and the history of the Senate."

Biographical Dictionary of the US Congress
Biographies, portraits, and bibliographies for all House and Senate members from 1774 - present. Many entries link to research collections elsewhere.

Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports
A selection of reports on public policy issues ranging from foreign affairs to agriculture to health care, made available by Senator Richard Lugar's (R-Indiana) website

Roll Call
Since its inception, Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill since 1955, has written about and for the US Congress. Instead of tracking issues and legislation, the newspaper and site cover "the three Ps: people, politics, and process."

THOMAS: Legislative Information on the Internet
The official site for Congress and Senate information. Contains links to the full text of legislation, full text of the Congressional Record, Congressional Record Index, Bill Summary & Status, Hot Legislation, the US Constitution, and more.

United States (Supreme Court)

Supreme Court Collection
A searchable, hypertext version of US Supreme Court decisions from May 1990 to the present. Also includes a searchable database of 582 historic decisions and information about the Court. Maintained by the Legal Information Institute at Cornell University, under the auspices of the Court's Project Hermes.

Supreme Court of the United States
The official site allows users to read the court's decisions the same day they are released. It offers the court's argument calendar, rules, schedules, bar admission forms, visitors' guides, etc.

Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents
This site offers all public statements or writings of the President, including speeches, press conferences, messages to Congress, etc.

President
This site's mission is to bring "presidential libraries materials onto the Internet for improved public access." A project spearheaded by the National Archives and Records Administration.

White House
The official site.

The American Presidency Project
One of the most comprehensive resources on the US presidency; more than 67,000 documents to date covering all presidents, including public papers, executive orders, proclamations, addresses, and press conferences.

United States (Elections and Political Parties)

Federal Election Commission
Information on elections and voting, as well as searchable campaign finance reports and data.

AllPolitics
News and features devoted to politics. A joint venture of CNN, Congressional Quarterly, and Time.

Democratic National Committee
The official site.

Republican National Committee
The official site.

opensecrets.org
Reveals sources of campaign funding. The Center for Responsive Politics is a non-partisan, non-profit research group based in Washington, D.C. that tracks money in politics, and its effect on elections and public policy.

Project Vote Smart
A national non-partisan, non-profit effort that researches, tracks, and provides to the "public independent factual information on over 13,000 candidates and elected officials. Voting records, campaign issue positions, performance evaluations by special interests, campaign contributions, backgrounds, previous experience, and contact information are available."

United States (Departments and Agencies)

Central Intelligence Agency
The official site includes agency information, intelligence community links, and the "CIA's Home Page for Kids."

Department of Education
The offical web site for the United States Department of Education. Lots of material on official policy, statistics, research studies and information on internal operations of the department.

Department of the Interior
The official site links to its eight agencies: US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Geological Survey, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Minerals Management Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.

Environmental Protection Agency
The official site for the agency whose mission is "to protect human health and to safeguard the environment." Includes the agency's strategic plan, a summary of what they've accomplished in their first 25 years, policy statements, and EPA projects.

The Library of Congress
Information about the Library of Congress, digital collections, and links to federal and state government information sources.

National Park Service
Information on the development, laws, and programs of the park service, including national parks, national monuments, and national historic sites. Information on specific parks and ideas for visiting them.

United States Geological Survey
The agency commissioned to gather scientific information on the earth in order to manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; protect the quality of life and minimize loss from natural hazards; and contribute to appropriate development.
