Q3. Would you agree that you found Moodle intuitive to use?

Date Response
10 Dec I had a hard time figuring out where things were at first...and the links take SO long to load...
09 Dec It's helpful to always have a place you can find an assignment even when you lose the hard copy.
09 Dec I found it very easy to use without a lot of instructor guidance, and I'm not very good with computers.
09 Dec I wish that I was told how to use moodle more clearly at the outset of the course.
09 Dec noooooo. too many options, and not clear where to put what. so unclear what was due, when and where to put it.
09 Dec Yep, it works great. very self explanitory
09 Dec Yes, it was well organized and easy to use.
09 Dec Easy to use, no problems navigating.
09 Dec Again, some interface design flaws based on Fitt's Law and a few other little things, but all-around presentable.
09 Dec i even put the language to icelandic for kicks and had no problem navigating it.
09 Dec the 'resources' button could have been bigger and in the center of the menu
09 Dec it was hard to find course material
08 Dec It was helpful if I missed certain aspects of lectures and wanted to print out hard copies of articles needed to be read for class. Also since it ivolves the class calendar and other helpful resources I used the program often.
08 Dec It was really nice to use moodle when the prof. posted class lectures and articles that we needed to read. However, when I used blackboard I knew that there was a way to post notes to the prof. and other students and a way for them to respond. If moodle can do this, I guess I'm just not educated enough with the program to use it properly.
08 Dec Moodle is so easy my grandmother could use it!
08 Dec As long as the teacher keeps it updated and site listings organized. It is very natural and simple to use.
08 Dec It was great to look on Moodle for class assignments and articles we need to read instead of going to the library.
08 Dec It did not seem intuitive what its powers were, and how much the professor was actually using. I would have liked to be able to help my professor use it more effectively, but couldn't figure out how it worked.

Q4. Would you agree that using Moodle was an asset to your course?

Date Response
18 Dec It allowed the professors to give us fewer handouts because they could put information on Moodle, and we didn't have to worry about loosing handouts.
10 Dec only because would have wasted lots of paper otherwise (my teacher liked to change assignments last-minute)
09 Dec I found moodle very helpful. I wish more of my classes were available. I wish the professor had continued to put our grades online but it was too time consuming and she stopped after the first assignment.
09 Dec It was SUCH an asset to have access to all of her lectures, images, and additional resources.
09 Dec I think it was a wonderful way to organize information and post comments and updates by the teacher and students. It was used a lot for one of my classes, and I believe it was very beneficial, and not used so much in another. The more the teacher is comfortable with it and uses it, the more helpful it is to the students. Also, it depends on the class that is using it. The class that used it a lot also used a lot of materials (such as news and pdfs) that were already on the web, so Moodle provided a great way to access these things.
09 Dec worked very well to get images for exams and articles
09 Dec Yes, but we wasted a whole lot of paper...maybe something could be done about that.
09 Dec confused things a lot
09 Dec It was great having everthing centrally located
09 Dec yes, it kept things organized and sorted.
09 Dec Somewhat of an asset, it certainly made handing in assignments easier.
09 Dec See previous answer.
09 Dec moodle was useful but it was also sometimes inhibiting.
09 Dec it kept things relatively organized and easy to access
09 Dec having the sylabus, assignments, images from the course (it being an art history class with image based lectures this was most important), extra readings/articles being online instead of interlibrary loan, all very helpful. however, PDF files are awkward to handle, and a lot of paper and ink is wasted printing off images. I do not know how to edit the size/content of a PDF file. this was a constant struggle and annoyance. When there were 50 images for a test, and i did not watn to just study off the screen, then i would have to print all 50 images.
09 Dec it wasn't necessary, we could have had handouts
09 Dec i don't like going to this platform and searching for the material julie put up
09 Dec It just made more work for us on top of the other homework. Now we have to go to websites and read articles that most of the time don't work, so I would say the application of Moodle at my school was not helpful.
08 Dec When it came time to study for a test all of the lecture notes that were on powerpoint were available and it was easy to recall class discussion based on the slides because we'd seen them in the classroom setting before.
08 Dec If it weren't for powerpoints on Moodle, I would have failed numerous tests!
08 Dec We would have had to take at least twice as much time in class without the powerpoint presentations on moodle. Although, I did a fair amount of time outside of class getting the powerpoints off of moodle. And I worry about how much paper is used up by people printing off of moodle.
08 Dec This comment is in regards to #5 below. I did not need any instruction with Moodle because I'd used it in a course before this one and had figured things out through trial and error. My rating og a 5 on #5 should not be taken as a complete endorsement of the ease of use of Moodle. There is still plenty of streamlining that it needs.
08 Dec If it wasn't for the slowness issue and the one-page problem, (ie. the professor put everything on one page), it was really nice.

Q8 Was it helpful to have the course contents viewable in the weekly or topic outline?

Date Response
10 Dec it was nice to know what reading I had so that I could schedule it in at a convenient time.
09 Dec If you miss a class you know what you missed without having to ask.
09 Dec That made it really easy to see when assignments were due, and what was coming up in the course.
09 Dec i agree, but it wasn't reliably there. and it wasn't all in one place. so frustrating
09 Dec Yes, that was very helpful. It made it easy to find things.
09 Dec yes that was nice to see it by its self
09 Dec It was hard when these changed around
09 Dec of course. syllaabi can be lost and this was a very approachable organized forum.
09 Dec I don't think we used that
09 Dec Most teachers didn't utilize this option.
08 Dec I abosolutely needed to be able to see these contents at all times.
08 Dec The topic outline organization greatly helped organize the powerpoints for studying for tests. Although, within the topics, sometimes I got confused about which powerpoints where which.
08 Dec Because we generally got behind the outline, which was not updated, it wasn't very easy to follow.
08 Dec Made it easier to search for assignments when clicking on the weeks.
08 Dec This comment is in regards to #7 above. I marked my answer as a #3, but I should also point out that I rarely actually checked moodle in response to an emailed annoucement about and update. I was much more apt to delete the email as a cluttering nuisance
08 Dec except that my professor didn't use it.

Q10. If you did not submit your assignments online would you like to do this?

Date Response
18 Dec Yes, we did submit assignments online. The teacher recieved ours, but it did not show up on the page the way the other groups' assignments did.
11 Dec Maybe for some types of assignments, but my math homework is usually hand-written, which wouldn't work well online.
10 Dec argh!
09 Dec I did submit assignments this way, and I really liked it.
09 Dec what does this question mean? badly written
09 Dec I did submit them online. it worked great.
09 Dec yes that would be nice
09 Dec I did submit my assignments online, and it was fun.
09 Dec did submit them online
09 Dec did submit them online
09 Dec i think that if i needed to do this email is just as effective. further, i prefer hard copy assignments, and the prof would have to print the assignment off for 35 students anyway, wasting their own time and resources. besides, i want a hardcopy back, with comments for all my work.
09 Dec If it actually worked.
09 Dec submitted some assignments online
08 Dec Makes life a little easier since my generation is becoming more machine inclined.
08 Dec I feel like turning in a hard copy is a way to make sure that there is no fault except the student's for not getting in an assignment on time. I think turning in electronic assignments can sometimes cause problems if the address is typed in incorrectly or otherwise.
08 Dec I do not use Micro$oft word.
08 Dec No, I dont like the idea of handing in assigment online. I like moddle to view things like powerpoints and resources--but I stil like to hand in assigments by hand.
08 Dec It is absolutely imperative that we reduce the paper usage on campuses across the world and Moodle is an integral asset in accomplishing these goals.
08 Dec I would like to submit my papers online, but I'm not sure about tests.
08 Dec It would save lots of paper
08 Dec yes, but I'm not sure it would have been all that practical for this course. Most of our assignments were worksheets.
08 Dec A built-in PDF creator or HTML viewer would be great. I had some trouble with formatting issues with the sending of essays. There are free ghostscript/PDF creators that you can run on the Linux/Unix/whatever server.

Q11 Which aspect / feature of Moodle did you like the best? The least?

Date Response
18 Dec One thing I didn't like was that because the instructors posted their powerpoint presentations on Moodle, they included all that information on the exams, even though it was more information than we could have written down in our notes, without using Moodle.
13 Dec i liked the weekly outline, it loaded info slowly most of the time
12 Dec I liked being able to go back and get class notes or things that I had missed in class, but I wish that the grades would have truly been kept up (for the entire semester there was only one grade posted).
10 Dec Best: Resources Least: n/a
10 Dec Best: the fact that I could ask questions and ppl would send me answers back faster than if I had tried to call and/or visit them. Least: the fact that I had to find a computer and wait forever for it to load before I could find out what my assignment was for that particular day.
10 Dec test review material
10 Dec um what was there was good. would have liked all class notes to be there before during and after the pertinent class but that was up to the teacher's disgression.
09 Dec i liked the resources, but grades were not posted and that would have been helpful.
09 Dec The access to our professor's lecture images was the best part.
09 Dec good way to cut overhead on course costs
09 Dec it was easy to use when it worked
09 Dec I liked the daily display format, how it showed latest updates, pretty much everything
09 Dec having access to images online was the best
09 Dec Best: Didn't have to buy books Worst: Wasted a lot of paper from the computer lab
09 Dec The fact that my late assingments wouldn't be graded.
09 Dec best...the uploading was usually easy and direct. least....journals because sometimes they were all viewable in one place and sometimes they weren't, sometimes they were closed and sometimes they weren't. frustrating
09 Dec Best- i like how everything was centrally located. things are easy to find. I like posting things online and how you can edit them if you need to before they are due. I like having the grades section. least-when we view the journal page it shows the entire journal and feedback instead of just a link to the journal. It takes a long time to load. If it was a link it would be better. Also it would be nice if moodle had drop boxes like chef.
09 Dec i liked all the different tabs. they were al useful. sometimes it was very slow....no good
09 Dec The ability to upload assignments. The inability to know whether or not an assignment has been graded, or the teacher simply hasnt gotten to it.
09 Dec I liked the easiness of finding out what we needed to do for a particular day.
09 Dec Best: localized course management system Least: design flaws, bugs, slow connectivity
09 Dec I liked the easiness of finding out what we needed to do for a particular day.
09 Dec having access to everything anytime i wanted
09 Dec the grade feature was annoyingly not working. there needs to be like an excel-looking matrix with just the dates. quicker loading would be good. simplify. and why that heinous pink. it makes me anxious. it looks like errant pepto-bismaly epidermis.
09 Dec turning work on-line... could work out of class
09 Dec class outline for the whole week
09 Dec liked the ability to check grades and look at assignments. hated not being able to post things or communicate with group members easily.
09 Dec I liked how you could look at the assignemts and grades.
09 Dec Being able to see my grades and feedback and assignments
09 Dec able to see real-time feedback on assignments, access grades 24-7, and always able to check on the assignment due
09 Dec assignments - submitting with this system was easy and useful, grades - nice to be able to check and keep up with status
09 Dec l iked how you could put links onto the toolbar and such, there wasnt much that i didnt like about moodle
09 Dec lecture notes
09 Dec I enjoyed how the assignments were visable immediately. I did not like how things took so long to load
09 Dec the weekly calendar system and the easy journal/file uploads
09 Dec It was nice to access information for tests, it was all in one place so that was helpful
09 Dec i felt pretty neutral about "moodle". I like my prof putting the lectures images and syllabus online. This could have been accomplished with a website too. The approachable quality of class content online was what i liked. if it makes sense to store this information in a single, earlham wide forum, like moodle, then props. keep it.
09 Dec it was difficult to read resources from the computer, most people printed them out and it was a waste of paper. if we had a handout packet it could have been printed on both sides and saved paper and the hassle of printing out all the documents
09 Dec i did not like using a system like moodle. not necessaryily moodle spacificaly but more as a general dislike for such a system
09 Dec I could access the readings whenever I wanted to.
09 Dec I liked the availability and the expectation of students to take care of themselves and use it as needed for their own personal needs.
09 Dec I liked getting study materials for tests. I did not like the fact that the websites/files/powerpoint presentations never worked.
09 Dec the ability in moodle to submit assignments was good for some of our assignments. the little security check my computer has to do through before loading each page was a little annoining.
09 Dec powerpoint slides
08 Dec course data
08 Dec Posted files
08 Dec best- easy to access/usful place for information least- not alll classes used it
08 Dec again, the ability to get information from class I missed and articels.
08 Dec I liked how it was broken down by the week and how there were links to access the powerpoints that had class lectures on them. It was also a very helpful way to post articles the students needed to read without having to waste paper by handing out a bunch of copies.
08 Dec best: links to research resources, updated syllabi least: no link to moodle from earlham website
08 Dec Being a Linux user, I do not like having to download Micro$oft word files that could easily be exported as RTF files or even plain text. Openoffice works, but I use it as a last resort. Rewrite question number 5, since you didn't have a text box for a response, it seems presumptuous to think that just because I didn't need any help with Moodle, that makes it incredibly easy to use. Being a Computer Science major with a high proficiency in computers, I understand things that others don't and things like Moodle make more sense to me. Our professor told us that some students were having difficulty with Moodle, and this didn't suprise me at all. --Daniel Arvesen --arvesda@cs.earlham.edu
08 Dec The only thing I really used Moodle for was to check weekly assignments. I think the webboard would be nice too, except no one else used it.
08 Dec I liked viweing powerpoint.
08 Dec I liked the fact that our reading were there and we could print them out if we felt necessary, or we could just read them and conserve paper.
08 Dec My favorite part of moodle was definitely the profile option. I found it so liberating to post a photograph to represent my online persona! I also enjoyed viewing the "avatars" of others, not to mention being able to see when the last time everyone logged on was. My least favorite part of moodle was that I had to log in every single time. After the first few times, typing in my password got so tiring that if it weren't for the awesome services moodle provided, I wouldn't have had the heart to do it.
08 Dec I liked getting the powerpoints off of Moodle.
08 Dec being able to look up the information I needed at the drop of a hat.
08 Dec easy to get papers to read. not really any negative aspect.
08 Dec liked being able to have powerpoint presentations on it
08 Dec The fact that the student visually saw what the professor was referring to in class. This was a good outline of the material covered and we could write notes on it during class. It also was a teaching aid in studying for exams. What I didn't like was when there were technical difficulties accessing the material (technical issues which didn't happen too often).
08 Dec I liked having the feature of having all the homework assignments in one place. I did not like the grading assessment as it was never accurate.
08 Dec i like that i can look at notes from class lectures and get articles to read for assignments
08 Dec best: always available, easy to access, straightforward
08 Dec the fact that I could read things online instead of printing them out, however, most of the resources/articles were so long that I began to get eye-strain when I read them on a computer screen for too long. I really do read better by having printed copies of things, and unfortunately we can't rig the printers to print double sided to conserve paper.
08 Dec Word documents should not display when I click them. They should download, and not be displayed in-line.
08 Dec the teacher would tell us one thing and moodle said another. it was confusing.

Q12 Are there other ways you can think of that Moodle could have been used in the course?

Date Response
12 Dec I think it would have been helpful to have postings from those in the class (questions or concerns) and then responses from other classmates and/or TAs and the prof when they had time
10 Dec no
10 Dec no.
10 Dec practice test/quiz questions
10 Dec not right now.
09 Dec maybe for discussions, or posting reaction papers/journals
09 Dec no
09 Dec Nothing that could be done by the operators of Moodle, but there are some things that teachers could have done differently.
09 Dec No.
09 Dec If it had drop boxes it would have been more useful for the group project. But otherwise there I can't think of anything else.
09 Dec no...i think it was good.
09 Dec allowing students to transfer files to each other using moddle.
09 Dec no.
09 Dec No.
09 Dec no.
09 Dec it was messy at the begining, but at the end of the semester it was more organized
09 Dec to discuss with other students out of your view. like a student only message board. but really, viewable to nonstudents. interactive discussions with T.As!!!!
09 Dec n/a
09 Dec no
09 Dec offer a chat options for classmates logged in to be able to communicate through moodle -- for help/ questions on assignments.
09 Dec ?
09 Dec no sure
09 Dec handing in assignments
09 Dec no
09 Dec in order to submit papers/assignments
09 Dec Maybe for posting grades?
09 Dec No
09 Dec No
08 Dec No
08 Dec No
08 Dec no
08 Dec The professor didn't put our grades in which would have been helpful to see how I was doing throughout the course.
08 Dec I think that Kathy made use of Moodle in a very effective way. It was the only time I've used moodle so I'm not sure how other profs are making use of it.
08 Dec we never used it for discussion groups; this could have helped us share information about good secondary sources for papers or ideas on our readings, possibly
08 Dec No, and I would have preferred my teacher just telling me what the assignment was in class instead of telling me to check it on Moodle.
08 Dec no
08 Dec My instructors used Moodle to the fullest! I am so happy that they posted readings to Moodle because it gave me the option to read them online, or print them myself for a hard copy. It was also nice to have everything in the same place so that I could access everything from anywhere on (or off!) campus
08 Dec maybe some more notes/resources on what we covered?
08 Dec would have liked the grades on Moodle to be updated, that would have been nice to be able to check our grades and the like
08 Dec I can't think of any.
08 Dec Maybe posting our test grades, both letter and percent and having an available reference to be able to refer back to of what the range of points was for say an A or B or C etc.
08 Dec posting grades for every assignment so we can check our grade in the class.
08 Dec no
08 Dec If it handled my login for the databases automatically--I went to Moodle to access Proquest/Historical New York Times database, because a link was provided there. It didn't identify me as being from Earlham's IP, which was a problem when trying to access the resources from home. If Sandrine (sanossa) could have used multiple sections more, that would have made it easier to find things.

Q14 Do you agree that Moodle was just as responsive from your dorm room as in the Lab?

Date Response
18 Dec Moodle was responsive, but I was unable to access pdf files because I do not have Adobe or another reading software.
12 Dec I live off campus and did not have the internet at home
11 Dec ..because of my wonderful 28.8 modem connection at home.
09 Dec I agree that it was as responsive, but not as accessable. I have it saved to my toolbar on my computer, but in the labs for some reason I had trouble with the URL, so I would have to go to Earlham's website and do a search for it.
09 Dec NO- with wireless it sucked
09 Dec Lab was faster. But not much faster.
09 Dec it was a little quicker here in the lab.
09 Dec There were times when the damn thing wouldnt let me log in from my dorm, and couldnt access it from the emails sent when the teacher posted feedback.
09 Dec Even worse in the dorms. Traffic can be seen from infected Windows machines all the time, and NetSquid seems to not catch them. Lines are permanently saturated with activity on all student lines, while the faculty lines maintain a relatively small load. Dell-made switches in all buildings have well-documented issues with persistantly high traffic, and lock up regularly every weekend (9:00 pm Friday). When they are up, download speeds are roughly 1.5kBps. -- Methinks it is time for ECS to drastically reduce the number of infected machines.
09 Dec internet in to dorrm did not work at all
09 Dec faster in classroom, but then the ethernet's supposed to be slower in the dorms.
09 Dec i have wireless in a campus house, which never is as responsive as the landlines the computer labs have. The campus houses need more reliable internet. I want to use ethernet again.
09 Dec I like in Norwich, and sometimes have difficulty getting online, and therefore, difficulty in checking moodle.
09 Dec Don't have a comp in my dorm room.
08 Dec I don't think I ever accessed moodle from the computer labs.
08 Dec I never used it in the lab
08 Dec Not a lab class.
08 Dec Moodle always loaded very quickly, even in my lab sessions when there were over twenty people logging on at once. It really blew my mind.
08 Dec Even though I do live in a dorm room, I do not like the format of this question because it assumes that everyone lives in the dorms. It should be restructured.
08 Dec My computer has been dead all semester, so I might have read things in my room more often than printing them if I'd been able to view them in my room with my music, etc. Then again, maybe not.
08 Dec It was too slow from both locations. Always prioritize the traffic, or use a client that starts an SSH connection to connect to Moodle. (if you can only prioritize based on protocol)
