Reusing / Restoring last year's course

Many faculty will want to reuse all or some of last year's course material in a current course. To do this currently (as of early Aug 05) you need to restore last year's course you have previously backed up and put it into your new course.

Preliminaries

  1. Login to Moodle and navigate to the new course that's been created for you: it'll be in your <department> category .
  2. Display the Adminstration block if it is not already visible (scroll down the page to check):
    Click turn editing on
In Blocks pull down Add —> Adminstration
  3. The Administration block appears

STEP 1

  1. Select Adminstration : Restore
  2. Now find the zip file to restore. You'll start in the backupdata folder in your Files section.
    1. Click Browse and navigate to the folder where the backup zip file is stored (usually in Documents or My Documents)
    2. Select the correct file (remember that the date & time you did the backup is recorded in the filename) and click Upload this file.
    3. When the message "File uploaded successfully" appears you know that the process has worked. Larger files may take some time to upload so be patient and wait for the window to refresh. If the backup file is larger than 64Mb the upload will fail. Contact markp or littejo for help.
  3. Now click the Restore link.
  4. You are informed what file you are about to restore (check to make sure it's what you really want) and you are given the option of continuing or not.
Click yes if you want to continue, no to abort the process.

STEP 2

Now a page of details about the backup appears which displays the Course summary, backup file & moodle version, backup details with all the components present.

Click Continue

STEP 3

  1. You have two Restore to options:
    1. Current course, adding data to it.
    2. Current course, deleteing it first.

The first option allows you to add the backedup course to material you may have already created in your new course.

  2. Include components of backup file. I suggest leaving all the activities selected but unchecking the User Data (click None in the second column).
  3. Users : None. You don't want to bring over any old student names.
  4. User Files : No
  5. Course Files : Yes. You want to include the resource files.

Click Continue

STEP 4

Click Restore this course now

The restore may take some time to complete. When it has finished you'll see a page with all the stuff that has been created. Glance through this to check that course files have been created and all the activities have been created. If you're feeling paranoid you can save this whole page (select File —> Save Page As and save somewhere sensible). At the bottom of the page you'll see the message "Restore completed successfully".

Click Continue

You are now taken back to the course with everything from last year's course in place. Go to Adininstration:Settings to check and modify the course settings (especially the Enrollment Key). The only Participant should be you as Teacher.
