part 1
  • Please complete Thursday's Lab assignment which I will grade. GIFs to include as attachments
  • Remember that I need answers to questions 2a 2b and 3 together with 4 graphic attachments in an email message sent to markp (and *not* to mgmt110-L). These are the files you need .....>
  • A reminder of how to do attachments:

In the "Compose" window which you have addressed to markp at the bottom is the "attach" box. Click Browse to go to drive H: and then find the first graphic (address_entry.gif). Now click open (it doesn't really "open") and you'll get back to the Compose window. Click the "Add" button and it'll now be attached to the message. Now repeat for all the other screen shots.

To make sure that it got to me add you own username to the CC field and then it'll come back to you as well.

part 2 Hoax
  • Read this article from Smart Computing about Email that's too good or too wierd to be true.
  • Answer questions:
    1. What is an Urban Legend. How does it differ from a hoax ?
    2. Follow one of the links to an Urban Legend site from this page and tell me about an urban legend that strikes you as believable (I don't want a story that's on this referring page).
part 3 Spam

Spammers have been described by Dave Barry thusly:

[Spammers] are the mutant spawn of a bizarre reproductive act involving a telemarketer, Larry Flynt, a tapeworm, and an executive of the Third Class mail industry. -- Dave Barry

from http://spam.abuse.net/

So, what's the problem?
read this article and summarize the reasons why spam (or uce) is a problem.

How does Brian Livingston's Infoworld column refute the 'free speech' arguments of the pro-spam lobby (who are they anyway?). How do some European countries address the issue? What else can you do - see Sue a Spammer Today? Finally, how is spam causing "the e-mail scandal" (read article to find out) and what does Brian Livingston imply should be done about it?

submitting details

Send your answers in an email message to MARKP with the subject line WEEK 1-2 HOMEWORK by Monday September 9th at 12:00 noon.

I will subtract points for a message without a personal name in the header (that is, I want to see From: "Mark Pearson"< markp@earlham.edu> and not just From: <markp@earlham.edu>). You know how to do this.

I will subtract points for an incorrect subject line.

I will not grade any email messages received after the due time and date.
