Since this is the first time I'm doing this sort of group project work I do not have any definitive student web sites as good examples of what I'm looking for. However, the following sites will be of some help

My All You Need to Know About Blogs site is a good example of the style of writing which I'm looking for. I'm certainly not looking for the level of page design that this site uses - that's more in the realm of the next stage web design course. The "Education" page gives a good idea of the amount of text I'm looking for and it illustrates the formatting of links that you will soon be able to mimic and how to use blockqotes to quote chunks of text. The "Google" page gives an overview of the interaction between Google and Blogs; however, if this is a theme of your project I would expect much more detailed explanations than the rather lightweight presentation offered on this page.

An Pham's Digital Divide project has some nice features:

  • Nice colour scheme
  • Good use of lists and nested lists
  • Relevant graphics with links to source pages
  • Good use of internal links
  • Good writing with a Conclusion section
  • Good styling of lists etc
  • Good to have a resource listing of web URLs used

What's not so good:

  • Spelling mistakes.
  • Graphics don't have <alt> or <title> attributes
  • The "Bach to top" (sic) internal link didn't work (no anchor)
  • No <title> attribute on the reference links to say what the web page is that you're going to.
  • "click here" on a link is big time naff.

Ariel Hearne created a very nice site to showcase her portfolio of photographs. This is very nicely laid out site. What's good:

  • effective layout
  • good linking and site navigation
  • quick loading
  • nice colour scheme for links and background

What's not so good:

  • no use of styles to create precise pixel sizes.
  • links are not rollovers
  • descriptive text is in Arial font and hard to read..

Stacy Beckman's Digital Divide page was created in Spring 2002 semester and gained an "A" grade

What's good about this project:

  1. Good use of chart to back up the argument.
  2. Notice how the chart is clickable and starts up a fresh page with the source page of the chart.
  3. All the other graphic images are clickable and bring up their sources.
  4. Nice formatting makes it easy to read.
  5. Chunk of text copied from a source is quoted and has the reference URL at the bottom of the page.
  6. Nicely placed and formatted link to the next page

What could be improved:

  1. The numbers used for footnote indicators in the text could have been superscripted (you know how to do that). They should also be internal links to the reference at the bottom of the page
  2. The references are nicely formatted but should be linked to the URLs they refer to.
