Introduction
  1. We want a presentation that's easy to see, to read, and engaging but not revolting.
So we need consistency, uniformity and coherence in the content and it's presentation.
  2. We need to pay attention to:
    • Typography — ie font face, font size
    • Colour schemes — complementary colours, contrast, warm and cool colours.
    • number of words - fewer the better
  3. Address these points by setting up a customised Master Slide which acts as the template for the whole slide show.
    • configuring the Master / Title Slide
    • Applying animations to the title and text
    • Using Design Templates
    • Saving customisation as default Blank Presentation
Classwork We'll create a simple presentation that showcases the points made above in "Anatomy of a good presentation". Use the information in "presentation anatomy" as content for your presentation. Follow the instructions below to create a Master Slide and animate it, and then insert slides shown on the handout.
It should come out something like this
Templates You can spice up your slide shows using pre-built, pre-owned templates that the nice chaps at Microsoft provide for all of us.
  1. Select File —> New and choose Design Templates tab and make a choice.
Master Slide
  1. From within Powerpoint Select View —> Master —> Slide Master
  2. Choose a sans serif font for the title - 40-44 point. What's the difference between sans-serif and serif font?
Select the Title text and choose Arial or Gill Sans or similar.
  3. In the lower box, select all the bulleted text and choose a sans serif font. Eg Rockwell or Arial.
Notice the different font sizes for each level.
  4. At the foot of the slide, select Date/Time and change font to sans serif, then select footer and # and do the same.
  5. Now select View —> Normal and then Insert —> New Slide and all the slides you insert will be formatted the same way.
Animate

You can also apply in-slide animations to the Master Slide so that the title enters into the slide and the text bullets appear one by one.

  1. While still in the Master Slide
  2. Select Slide Show —> Custom Animation
  3. Click Effects tab
  4. check Title 1 and choose "fly from left"
  5. check Text 2 (note which box is selected in the demo window):
    1. from pulldown menu choose "fly from right"
    2. choose Introduce Text : All at Once
    3. check "Grouped by" and select 3rd from pulldown menu
    4. click on Preview button to see how this affects the animation of text on the slide
  6. To change the order in which each element gets animated click the Order and Timing tab, select the element (eg text 2) and use the Move arrows to change the animation order.
  7. This animation is now set for all slides that use this Master.
Using the Master
  1. Select View —> Normal
  2. Select Insert —> New Slide.
