Setting things up

We will be using an online tutorial to master the art of Spreadsheets and in particular, Microsloth Excel.

  1. Download the working excel spreadsheet budget.xls and save it in a folder called excel on your Home drive.

  2. Fire up Excel (in the Applications folder on the desktop)

  3. Start up Internet Exploder with the Excel lessons by going to http://www.jegsworks.com/Lessons/numbers/intro/index.html

  4. Arrange the Excel and browser windows so that they occupy half the screen each (thanks to Duane Moore for this idea):

Tasks to do

We are going to do Project 1: Excel Intro today and Project 2: Basics on Thursday.

  1. Select Cell Select Range Select Row / Column Views Open the Select & Navigate Menu (skip Interfaces) and you can skim though the following , making sure that you can do the operations:

  2. Now open the Common Tasks Menu and do all of them:

    Autosum Sort Chart Wizard Number Formats

  3. Finally, do all of the Exercises:

    Exercise 1 : AutoCalculate Exercise 2 : AutoSum, Sort, Format Exercise 3: Chart

    Exercise 1 :
    Use the budget.xls that you have already downloaded. Write the answers on a piece of paper and then type them into a Blog entry entitled “exercise 1 : budget”
    Exercise 2 :
    Download the file halfyear.xls and save in H:\excel folder. Use this file for this exercise and save it as halfyeartotals.xls. Save this file and then upload it to your blog.
    Exercise 3 :
    Use the file halfyeartotals.xls that you saved from exercise 2. Add the chart and save it as halfyeartotals_chart.xls and upload this to your blog.
