The Odyssey is a two-week summer
program that is hosted by Earlham College in June. Students
will
immerse themselves in a team-oriented, theme-based, experiential
curriculum. Challenge education, writing, computer and library
work, career exploration, and developing group presentations
complete the institute experience. Summer staffing is provided
by Earlham students and the classes are taught by Earlham faculty. Odyssey
2005 Schedule.
Academic Year Programs:
We want to provide support to all our students through the year.
In this effort, we have been implementing Tutoring and Mentoring
programs as well as high school, testing and college-related preparations.
There is no cost to attend any of these workshops, but you do
need to call us to register if you plan to attend.
Mentoring
TeleMentoring. At all of the other
schools, we have Earlham College Mentors call our Odyssey students
at home
on the phone a couple times a month to chat about how things
are going, to help make sure that our students are doing fine
socially
and academically, to swap stories of recent happenings, and to
answer college-pursuit questions.
Mentoring Schedule.
Tutoring Program
Tutors are available in any
subject matter that you need. We will arrange a one-on-one or
small group tutor for you here at Earlham at a time that works
for you. There is no cost for Odyssey students.
Tutoring Schedule.
SAT Preparation Workshops
Conducted by experienced high school teachers, these workshops
help prepare all juniors and seniors in the high schools for the
SAT and ACT. The workshops provide outlines of the exams, tips
on how to reason through a difficult question, and suggestions
on how to continue to prepare. These workshops are held in the
fall and in the spring, as we recommend that our students take
the SAT (or ACT) during the spring semester of their Junior Year
and again in the fall of their Senior Year, at a minimum.
Upcoming SAT Workshop.
College Application Seminars
We hold this seminar in the fall to help students to get a sense
of what it is like to fill out an effective college application.
The leaders of the workshop discuss what admissions officers
like to see, what types of things are best to include (and not
include) in your application, as well as providing tips on writing
an effective college application essay. We encourage parents
to attend this seminar as well as students.
As a follow-up to anyone who has attended the seminar, we are
happy to help any of our Odyssey students who would like some
additional
help with their applications.
Upcoming Seminar.
Navigating High School Workshops.
We hold these workshops for eighth graders and high school Freshmen
to help you navigate through the many high school requirements
and options that you have as you enter high school as a Freshman.
We provide you with information about diploma options, graduation
requirements, and more! We encourage parents to attend these
events as well as students.
Odyssey Reunions
Parents:
Parent Workshops
The Odyssey program has designed a group of workshops for parents
and their students to learn more about the processes of preparing
for
college. Workshop titles include Navigating High School, How
College Admissions Offices Make Decisions, and many more. These
workshops are designed to work with parents on how they can
be a good advocate for their child and best prepare them for
the college or post-secondary experience, both academically
and socially.
Supportive Phone-calls from ELII staff
College Application Seminars
Teachers:
Academic year and summer professional development programs including
workshops on brain research; roundtable discussions for guidance
counselors, foreign language teachers, and librarians; training
in the Socratic Seminar method of teaching; and on-site assistance
with school accreditation processes.
Counselors' Roundtable
Discussions
The Odyssey program supports
Roundtable Discussions for partner school faculty and their
counterparts at Earlham
College. Our goal in coordinating these discussions is to provide
a venue and an opportunity for faculty in the same and/or
similar
disciplines to meet, and to share ideas and strategies for
successful engagement of students. Roundtable participants
set the agenda
for discussion based on need.
Currently, the Odyssey program supports breakfast Roundtables
for school guidance counselors once per month. Counselors have
discussed
current
books (Real Boys' Voices, and Understanding
Poverty), the collection and use of data to make
decisions, and taked to representatives from local mental
health agencies
and grief support groups.
The Odyssey program has also supported Foreign Language Faculty
Roundtables, as well as Roundtable for Math and Science faculty,
and school
librarians.
