Summer Wilderness - A Different Kind of Orientation
Started in 1971, Earlham's Summer Wilderness Pre-Orientation Program is one of the oldest outdoor orientation programs of its kind in the country. We believe that participating on one of our summer courses is the best possible preparation you can have to ensure a successful transition to college life. But don't just take our word for it, listen to what previous participants have said:
"This program is absolutely amazing! I never expected it to be so incredible the leaders were great and the stories, experiences, and knowledge they were able to add were entertaining and interesting. Fabulous overall." -- Recent Summer Wilderness participant
"I had a wonderful experience. Because of where I am in my life, on the verge of a major transition to college, I needed a reminder of myself and my abilities, which I discovered on solo and in the company of others. I am more excited for Earlham and the new adventures that lie ahead." -- August Wilderness Mountain participant
"This entire trip was amazing! It was a great way to start college. It was really nice to be with a group of people my own age, doing something that was new to all of us, making new friends and experiencing the wilds of Canada. This entire trip taught me so much about who I am and what I am capable of." --August Wilderness Water participant
There are two different offerings through the Summer Wilderness Program: August Wilderness and June Wilderness. All Summer Wilderness courses combine active physical challenge with study, observation, and personal reflection. No previous wilderness experience is required. Trained upper-class students and faculty leaders provide technical and academic instruction. Course work in the local history, geology, and ecology of the area combined with facilitated discussions on such topics as leadership, decision-making, and conflict resolution are woven through the experience. Readings, journal writing and brief essay assignments deepen the experience and provide the basis for academic credit. Follow the links below to start your Earlham adventure early!
