INFORMATION/FAQ SHEET FOR CHALLENGE EDUCATION
What will we be doing?
The Challenge Education Program at Earlham College offers several complementary avenues for developing leadership and teamwork skills for groups including an outdoor high and low ropes course, an indoor climbing wall, and our mobile initiatives program. Depending on your program, you may do one, some, or (rarely) all of the above options. As most programs are outside, you should be prepared for the weather and exposure to insects, sun, and plant life such as poison ivy.
What should I bring?
Because most programs are outside and we run programs 12 months out of the year, we recommend the following:
- A water bottle
- Any necessary, prescribed medications (such as inhalers, epinephrine, etc.)
- Closed toe and heel shoes- no sandals or flip flops please
- Comfortable and appropriate clothing (bring layers- particularly during colder weather). A hat can be particularly beneficial for sun protection or warmth
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (as needed)
- Rain wear (most programs run rain or shine)
- Cold weather gear (as needed) including gloves, coat, hat, and wool socks
- Bug repellant (it must be DEET-free- DEET damages nylon equipment)
- Lunch and/or snacks (if needed, check with your group organizer).
What should I leave behind?
Jewelry and other items that can be easily snagged and/or lost. Please refrain from bringing game boys, portable radios, or other electronics. Personal valuables should be locked in your car. Also, try to leave behind pre-conceived notions of what the program is like- live in the moment and come with an open mind!
Finally, remember to bring your signed waiver and medical history form. These are mandatory for participation! If you have any questions please contact the program office at (765) 983-1327 or wilderness@earlham.edu. Have a great program!
