Job Opportunities
Many work-study and non-work study employment opportunities exist with the Wilderness Program. An application can can be picked up at the Wilderness Office. First and second years are particularly encouraged to apply. Some positions (i.e. August Wilderness Leader) require more experience and qualifications than others.
Outdoor Rental Center Attendant
Time: 2-6 hrs./weekLocation: Bundy basement
Pay Rate: Hourly Wage
Description:
Assist customers with gear rentals, trip assistance, clean and organize returned gear, help organize group gear for Wilderness trips, and completing other projects as needed.
Wilderness Office Assistant
Time: 2-10 hrs./weekLocation: Wilderness House
Pay Rate: Hourly Wage
Description:
Wilderness Office assistants will work with the Director and Assoc. Director providing office help including filing, data entry, trip preparations, marketing and promotions, and other projects as needed.
AWPE Instructors
Time: 40 hours/semesterLocation: On/Off-Campus
Pay Rate: Stipend depending on experience
Description:
Wilderness AWPE courses include rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, and skiing. Job duties include curriculum development, all course preparation and instruction, and any necessary paperwork including budgets and evaluations.
Challenge Education Facilitators
Time: On-Call (approx. 6-20 hrs. per month)Location: Outside, back-campus
Pay Rate: Hourly Wage depending on experience
Description:
Both High and Low Ropes course facilitator positions available (training provided). Job duties include leading groups through challenge education activities including team building, problem solving, and physical obstacle exercises. Most courses run during August-October and March-May.
Climbing Wall Supervisors
Time: 4-8 hrs/weekLocation: Wellness Center
Pay Rate: Hourly Wage
Description:
Supervise and manage the climbing wall facility including assisting customers, performing belay checks, maintaining equipment, and other associated tasks.
August Wilderness Leaders
Time: Summer (July-August)Location: Utah or Canada
Pay Rate: Stipend depending on experience
Description:
Student Leaders on August Wilderness co-lead a group of 8-12 students on 24-day experiences in both Canada (water/canoeing) and Utah (mountain/backpacking and climbing). Student Leaders, along with the Faculty Leader, are responsible for the educational and programmatic outcomes of the course including teaching outdoor skills, facilitating group discussions, and monitoring group safety.
