House at Earlham
Purpose
The purpose of Peace House is to establish what activists struggle
to develop on a global scale; that is, a peaceful community. Its
main emphasis centers on the fostering of peaceful resolution of
conflict and finding ways to achieve harmony in a realistic context.
Anyone can live in Peace House as long as he or she understands
the criteria.
The house and its members, in conjunction with Peace and Global
Studies and other organizations, sponsor Peace With Justice Week
every year. The house is also used to host community forums on peace
and social justice concerns of both the Earlham and Richmond communities.
The house is open to sophomores and upperclass students and positions
for seven residents every year.
Criteria
1. Students applying to Peace House should be either Peace and
Global Studies Majors or majors with a peace-related focus (i.e.
international, studies, politics, economics, environmental science,
etc.). Priority will be given to PAGS Seniors and PAGS majors who
can justify living in peace house this year. This criteria does
not mean that non-PAGS majors should be excluded. Rather, it prioritizes
PAGS majors. In fact, Peace House wants to include some non-PAGS
majors for new perspectives. Sophomores and Juniors sometimes have
more time to devote to the activities of the house.
2. Peace House seeks activists committed to peace and social justice.
In other words, students applying to Peace House should be actively
involved in some peace and justice organization (CISLA, CJME, ESA,
EEAC, etc.) and/or project (Cuba/Nica Brigades, etc.) either at
Earlham or in the Richmond community. If a student is not an activist,
she/he must show a genuine devotion to being an activist while living
in Peace House.
3. House capacity as determined by Housing is seven people. There
is one single room downstairs and two single rooms and two double
rooms upstairs.
4. Peace House is to be a welcoming, open place to the surrounding
communities. This means it should be open for various meetings and
events initiated by people in the house but also ones initiated
by other groups or persons.
5. Peace House is responsible for organizing Peace with Justice
Week during fall term. There should also be other events throughout
the year that demonstrate the activism of the Peace House community.
6. There should be 3-4 members of the house that will live there
a whole year to provide continuity. Other spaces may be filled by
people who are away for part of the year.
